Box Score Alma, MI – Alma Volleyball hosted the Belles of Saint Mary's College in MIAA play on Wednesday. The Scots were victorious by a score of 3-1, snapping a 10 game losing streak.
The Scots led for most of the first set, but the Belles found a late surge that propelled them past the hosts to take the first set 25-19. That first set win was the closest that the visitors would come to victory. Alma responded in dominant fashion in the second set. The offense came to life and exploded for 16 kills, and the defense turned up the intensity, holding the Belles to 6 kills. The explosion resulted in Alma taking the set 25-14. The third set was more of a battle, with Alma getting off to a slow start and fighting back to take the set 25-22. The fourth set was all Alma, as the Scots jumped out to an early lead, and would hit .367 to notch 15 kills on the way to taking the set 25-17.
Callie Smith led the way offensively with 10 kills and 3 aces. She added 5 assisted blocks to total 15.5 points, a game high. Brooke Leroux also totaled 10 kills as she also found herself with 5 assisted blocks for 12.5 total points. Reagan Thorr hammered home 9 kills as well, with Madison Neu, McKenzie Smith and Ashlyn Michalski adding in 7 kills apiece.
Defensively, it was a block party for the Scots. Alma totaled 10 blocks, 2 solo and 8 assisted. Madison Neu found herself on a highlight play as she snagged a solo block using only one hand.
Megan Greenup totaled 25 assists, and Ashley Miller added 21 assists to go with a game high 4 aces. Lexi Dykstra also landed 4 aces. Kolbey Boyd totaled 17 digs, with Dykstra giving 15 digs in her efforts.
Alma improves to 3-14, and stays alive in the MIAA tournament race with the win. They will be in action against Millikin University at Calvin on Friday.
