Tobias steps down as Alma head wrestling coach

ALMA, Mich. — Jeremiah Tobias, the head coach of the Alma College wrestling team, will be leaving the program, athletic director Sarah Dehring announced Friday, Sept. 10.

"I'd like to thank Jeremiah for everything he has done for Alma College and the wrestling program, and wish him well in his future endeavors," Dehring said.

Tobias was named the head wrestling coach in 2016 after serving as an assistant for the previous five years. Since that time, Tobias coached three All-Americans and four Academic All-Americans. In the 2018-19 season, the Scots finished in 17th place at the NCAA national tournament, and in the 2020-21 season, Alma finished third at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Dual Championships.

"I'd like to thank Alma College, the Alma community, alumni and student-athletes for the opportunity to coach, mentor and impact lives while doing what I love for the past 10 years," Tobias said. "Change is the only guarantee in life. My family and I cherish the friendships we have with our wrestlers, parents, alumni and coaches. I wish the wrestling program the best moving forward. Go Scots."

As a wrestler, Tobias was a four-time Michigan High School Athletic Association champion — the seventh in state history — and finished his collegiate career at the University of Michigan as the Wolverines' leader in both career and single-season pins.

Following college, Tobias collected experience as a coach in several settings. He served as an NCAA Division I assistant coach at the University of Wyoming and as a full-time NCAA Division II coach at Belmont Abbey College.
