Box Score 2 KALMAZOO, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team split a doubleheader at Kalamazoo College Sunday. The Scots were shut out in the first game but came back to win the second game, 8-7. Alma finishes the conference regular season with an 8-10 record against MIAA opponents while its overall record stands at 13-17.
Alma was only able to muster out four hits in the opener as the Hornets took a big lead early and ran away with a win. Drew Koenig pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
In game two, Kalamazoo took another early lead but the Alma bats started to come alive. In the second inning, Wyatt Nyswaner drove home a run with two outs to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Alma tied the game in the third off a two-run home run by Avery Carnicom. Jaret Koin then put the Scots in front in the fourth with a two-out triple that plated a run. Kalamazoo responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and then scored three more in the fifth to take a 7-4 advantage.
In the sixth, Alma put some runners on early and Kevin Tuttle drove home one to make it 7-5. The Scots then had the bases loaded with two outs with Alex Dwan stepping to the plate in a pivotal moment in the game. The senior hit a clutch double down the right field line that cleared the bases, scoring all three runs, to give Alma an 8-7 lead.
Jayden Drake kept the Hornets off the scoreboard in the sixth and then Koenig was brought in with one runner on and no outs in the seventh to earn the save. A sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position with one out but Koenig got the next two batters to go down swinging to seal the victory for the Scots.
On the day, Carnicom had four hits, two RBI and one run scored. Nyswaner went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Scots head to Saginaw Valley State University for a non-conference game on Wednesday, May 5th for a 3:05 start time.
