Box Score 2 HOLLAND, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team split a pair of games at Hope College Friday. The Scots lost the opener, 8-7, and then came back to win the second game, 12-5. Alma is now 10-10 overall and 5-3 in conference.
In game one, the Scots scored two in the top of the first off the bat of Zach Schirmer who hit a two-RBI triple to put Alma on the board. Hope would respond with two off its own in the bottom of the inning.
The Scots would add two more in the second but Hope responded with four to take a 6-4 lead. The score would stay that way until the sixth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Alma got its first three batters aboard and then Jacob Cornman drew a walk to make it a one-run game. Kevin Tuttle then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6 a piece. With two outs, Avery Carnicom hit a clutch RBI single to put the Scots back in front, 7-6.
Hope would not go away though, in the bottom of the sixth a two-out 2-RBI double made it 8-7 Flying Dutchmen. The Scots were unable to rally in the final inning and fell in the first game of the day.
Alma looked to rebound from the loss as they took an early 1-0 lead off a Hope error in the second inning. After the Flying Dutchmen scored one in the bottom of second, Alma plated five runs in the top of the third to take a commanding lead. Jaret Koin scored on a wild pitch while Schirmer, Cornman and Macguire Hawley all drove in runs for Alma.
Hope chipped away at the lead and made it 6-5 game heading to fifth. That is where the Scots bats came to life with a six-run inning to push the Alma lead to seven. Alex Dwan knocked in a run, then Schirmer scored on a passed ball, Cornman drove in Dwan, Koin had a sacrifice fly and then Tuttle plated a run. Finally, with two outs, Schrimer came up for the second time that inning and brought in another run on bases loaded walk.
On the mound, Aaron Saenz, who was recently named to the D3 Baseball National Team of the Week, pitched a complete game for the Scots. He struck out five over seven innings and earned the win.
On the day, Tuttle had four hits and three RBI while Schrimer had two hits, three RBI and two runs.
The Scots and Flying Dutchmen will meet again at Klenk Park on Saturday for a doubleheader. First game scheduled for 1 p.m.
