Box Score ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team fell, 20-10, to Northwood University on Wednesday at Klenk Park. The Scots hung with the Timberwolves, who are ranked in the NCAA Division II National Rankings, with the score 9-9 after five innings. However, Northwood would pile on some late runs to come away with the win.
The Scots see their record hit .500 again at 9-9 on the season. The Timberwolves move to 15-4 on the year.
After giving up two runs in the top of the first, Alma responded with four in the bottom half. Joshua Robinson drove in a run on ground out and then later Avery Carnicom and Kevin Tuttle both scored on an error. Maguire Hawley delivered a two-out RBI single to put the Scots up by two.
Northwood put up six runs in the second but Alma kept its offense going as well. Zach Schirmer knocked in a run and then Carnicom scored again on a Northwood error. The Scots were down 8-6 after two innings.
Carnicom drove in a run to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the third. Northwood tacked on a run in the fourth but the Scots tied it up in the fifth thanks to a two-out 2-RBI double to deep center field by Alex Dwan to make it 9-all after five frames.
The Timberwolves scored three in the sixth and three more in the eight to take a commanding lead. The Scots rallied in the eighth with Hawley leading off the inning with a triple and later scoring on a Cooper Kauffold ground out to make it 15-10. Alma was able to load up the bases with one out but were not able to cash in any more runs. Northwood scored five more in the ninth to finish out the scoring.
Hawley had an impressive 4-for-6 day at the plate while Carnicom went 3-for-5. Dwan picked up three hits while Kauffold had two. Schirmer drove in two runs while also scoring two.
Drew Koenig pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen while Nick Baidoon recorded the final two outs for the Scots with both of them coming on strikeouts.
Alma gets back into conference play with a four-game series against Hope College this weekend. The first doubleheader will be in Holland on Friday with the second doubleheader on Saturday taking place in Alma.
