Box Score 2 ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Albion College at Klenk Park on Saturday. The Scots came back from down 5-0 to score seven unanswered runs to win the first game, 7-5. Joshua Robinson hit a walk off home run to win the game for the Scots in the opener. In game two, Aaron Saenz pitched a one-hit shutout as Alma won by a score of 7-0.
In game one, the Scots dug themselves into a 5-0 hole after a few costly errors. Alma then came out with a big fourth inning as the first seven batters reached base to start the inning. Zach Schirmer and Alex Dwan both got on base and Jacob Cornman drove them in with a double to right field to make it a 5-2 ballgame.
Macguire Hawley and Cooper Kauffold then both reached base and Wyatt Nyswaner drove in a run to make it 5-3. Jaret Koin then hit a single to right field. An errant throw by the Britons allowed Nyswaner and Kauffold to came across home plate and tie the game at 5.
Dylan Dzendzel, the starting pitcher for Alma, started to find his groove as the game went on. In the sixth inning, the lefty struck out all three batters. The senior ended up with nine strikeouts over 6.2 innings pitched.
Albion loaded up the bases in the top of the seventh. Alma then brought in Jayden Drake out of the bullpen to get out of the jam. The junior forced a pop out to keep the game tied.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kevin Tuttle drew a walk to put the winning run on first. Robinson then stepped up to the plate and launched a home run over the right field wall to win the game in walk off style.
In game two, the Scots put a run on the board in the first inning with Schirmer driving home Kevin Tuttle on a single. Alma scored another in the second with Koin earning a two-out RBI.
Alma built onto its lead in the fourth inning with three runs all scoring with two outs. Koin plated one, then Robinson brought in two more runs on double to center field. The Scots led 5-0 heading into the fifth.
Saenz was cruising through the game at this point, retiring all 12 batters he faced. A bloop single to right field in the fifth ended Saenz's perfect game chances. The senior was unphased though as he would go onto retire the final nine batters of the game.
Stephen McGlade singled in Hawley in the fifth and Schirmer brought home Koin in the sixth for some insurance runs. Saenz got the final batter to go down looking to finish the complete game shutout
On the day, Koin went 4-for-8 with two runs and two RBI. Schirmer went 4-for-7 with one run and two RBI. In game two, Hawley reached base all three times and scored all three times. Between the two games, Hawley was hit by a pitch three times.
The Scots and Britons will meet again for another twin bill at Albion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
