Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By Hunter Chovanec, Sports Information Student Assistant

Grand Rapids, Mich.- The Alma College baseball team traveled to Calvin University to conclude their series with the Knights on Saturday (Mar. 27). Alma would win game one 13-3, but fall in game two 10-9. The Scots overall record stands at 7-8 while they begin the MIAA season 2-2.

Alma would jump on the Knights in the first inning of game one with six runs. After Jaret Koin scored on a Calvin error, Avery Carnicom sent a ball over the wall for a home run that scored Kevin Tuttle. Alex Dwan would then make it 4-0 Scots with a single to right field, scoring Zach Schirmer. After two more runs in the first, the Scots didn't let up in the top of the second. Schirmer, Dwan, and Jacob Cornman would each pick up RBIs for Alma to make it 9-0 after two innings. Alma would use the big early lead to cruise to victory in eight innings, while Cornman led the Scots with three RBIs. On the mound, Dylan Dzendzel would earn his second victory of the season after throwing five innings and recording six strikeouts.

The Scots would take an early lead in game two as well when Tuttle singled home Koin in the top of the first inning. Calvin would come back with two in the bottom of the second, but Alma would respond in the third. Senior Dwan would double to right field and score fellow senior Schirmer. Macguire Hawley would then drive in Dwan with a single to make it 3-2 Scots. The next inning, Carnicom would hit his second two run home run of the day when he sent it over the left field fence, scoring Koin. Koin then had a two run single in the top of the fifth that scored Hawley and Noah Hamilton. Calvin would not go away quietly however, and the Knights used a five run sixth inning to earn the one run victory. Chase Balhoff was the starting pitcher for the Scots before being relieved by Ty Sobczak, who was credited with the loss.

Alma's next series is set to begin at Klenk Park on Friday (Apr. 2) when they host the Trine University Thunder. The doubleheader will begin at 2:00 p.m.
