Scots Battle Tough With Hope

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Holland, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team lost a pair of 7-6 games to the Hope College Flying Dutchmen on Saturday. Junior third baseman Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich. / Johannesburg-Lewiston) collected four hits on the day with two runs and two RBI including a solo home run in game one.

In both matchups, the Scots and Flying Dutchmen were tied 6-6 before Hope won in walk off fashion.

Alma's record now reads 9-17 overall and 5-9 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Flying Dutchmen move to 22-1 on the year and tied atop the MIAA standings with a 13-1 conference record.

Game One: Hope 7, Alma 6

  • Huff got the Alma offense going with his solo blast to center. It ended a 6-0 start by the Flying Dutchmen. The Scots used the long ball again to cut the lead to two when freshman right fielder Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) hit his first career home run with two runners on base.
  • Senior Jordan Masters (Waterford, Mich. / Kettering) entered the game in the bottom of the fifth out of the bullpen. He got Hope to go down 1-2-3 for the first time on the day to keep the lead at two.
  • The Scots kept chipping away as junior center fielder Pete Carravallah (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) drove in junior Brandon Gallerson (Plano, Texas / Plano Senio) with two outs to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
  • Alma was down to its final out with nobody on in the top of the seventh when senior left fielder Jordan Anstandig (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) stepped up to the dish. The left-hand hitter smacked one out of the park to complete the six-run comeback.
  • Hope kick started the bottom of the inning with a double, then loaded the bases after an intentional walk and single. The Scots defense was able to execute a double play with junior second baseman Carter Sanderson (Ilderton, Ont. / Central Secondary School) throwing out the winning run at home and junior catcher Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich. / Standish-Sterling) relaying it to third to get the second out.
  • The Flying Dutchmen would earn back-to-back walks that would bring the winning run home and end the game.

Game Two: Hope 7, Alma 6

  • The Scots were the first to score in the second game when Anstandig hit his second home run of the day in the second inning for a two-run shot.
  • The lead was boosted to 3-0 when junior third baseman Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) plated a run on a ground out in the third. Koin made it a 4-0 game with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
  • After Hope put up its first run, Alma pushed it back to a four-run lead in the fifth with a two out RBI single by Huff. The Flying Dutchmen responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth to take their first lead of the ballgame with 6-5 the score.
  • Alma rallied in the eighth with two outs. Koin got on base after being hit by a pitch and then Carravallah brought him all the way home with a double to right.
  • The game would once again end with two outs as this time Hope would win the game on a walk off home run.
