Baseball Edged By Earlham

Box Score

Richmond, Ind. – The Alma College baseball team loss, 5-3, to the Earlham College (IN) Quakers on Tuesday (Mar. 19). Junior Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich. / Johannesburg-Lewiston) hit 2-for-3 with one RBI on the day. Senior Jordan Masters (Waterford, Mich. / Kettering) suffered his first loss of the season after going four innings and giving up five earned runs.

With the loss, Alma drops to 4-8 on the season while the Quakers improve to 7-6 this year. This game was added to the Scots schedule after one of their games earlier in the season was cancelled. This was the final game of Alma's nonconference schedule this year.

How It Happened

  • Earlham got on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. They added two more in the second. In the fourth, the Quakers got a two-out two RBI triple. The batter who hit the triple attempted to run home but was thrown out with junior center fielder Pete Carravallah (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) relaying it to junior shortstop Zach Schirmer (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) who threw out the runner with the third baseman Huff applying the tag.
  • The Alma offense finally broke through in the seventh inning. With one out and junior Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich. / Standish-Sterling) on first base, freshman Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) hit a double to center to knock in Koin. Huff stepped into the batter's box next and pushed one through to center and Robinson came around to score to cut the lead to three.
  • In the eighth, senior Jordan Anstandig (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) reached first on a drop strike three to start things off. The senior advanced to second on a wild pitch then to third on a ground out by Schirmer. Junior Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) plated Anstandig with double to right.
  • Huff tried to start a rally with a double down two with one out in the ninth, he advanced with two outs on a wild pitch but was left stranded after Anstandig fouled out on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Notables

  • The Scots were outhit, 8-2, in the first four innings. They would outhit the Quakers, 5-2, the rest of the way.
  • Trucks went 2-for-4 in the game. The junior is tied with Huff for most hits on the team with 12.
  • Robinson extended his hit streak to five games today.
  • Both freshman Ty Sobczak (Petoskey, Mich. / Petoskey) and junior Dylan Clark (Tomball, Mich. / Tomball Memorial) pitched two shutout innings in relief. Sobczak has not given up an earned run through the first five appearances of his career.
