Volleyball Ends Mount Union Invite with Another Split

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team won its first match today (Sept. 2) 3-2 over Allegheny and dropped its next match 3-0 against Denison. This concludes the Scots' opening slate of games at the Mount Union Invitational.

Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott Country) led the team with 14 kills. She was one of seven players to be named to the All-Tournament team. Kara Muxlow (Brown City, Mich. / Brown City) and Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) followed close behind with 13, each. Muxlow also posted a team high .465 attack percentage.

Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich. / Gaylord) and Miranda Shafer (Norton Shores, Mich. / Western Michigan Christian/St. Clair County CC) once again shared the setting duties for the Scots (2-2). Pelach tallied 30 assists while Shafer had 27. Pelach also shared the team lead in digs with Brianna Zimmer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) with 19 on the day.

What Happened

  • In game one against Allegheny, Alma trailed 2-1 going into the fourth set. It won set four 25-15, posting its best attack percentage of the day at .375. The team followed up that performance with a 15-12 win in the fifth set, connecting on .278 percent of its attacks. The final two sets of game one were the team's best according to hit percentage.
  • Against Denison, Alma dropped the first two sets and hung tough in the third, working its way to a 17-15 lead. Denison would go on a 6-0 run to take control and eventually, the match.

Notables

  • Novak and Muxlow posted new career highs in attack percentage. Novak hit .348 against Allegheny while Muxlow hit a scorching .643 with no errors against Denison. Muxlow's previous career high was .316 as a sophomore.
  • Thirteen digs for Zimmer against Allegheny is a new career high.
