Men's tennis falls to Adrian, 9-0

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Adrian College on Sunday at the Superior Street Tennis Courts, suffering their fourth straight loss.

The Scots (4-9 overall, 0-3 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) pushed a pair of singles competitions into third sets. Freshman Evan Vergith (Holly, Mich./Holly) fell in the first set by a tiebreaker at No. 3 singles, then won the second set, 6-1, before falling in a third-set match tiebreaker.

Freshman Jonathon Groening (Midland, Mich./Middle Christian) also took his match at No. 4 singles into a third set after falling, 6-2, in the opening frame. Groening won the second set, 6-3, and battled Adrian's Jeff Sophiea to a 7-5 loss in the third set.

Junior Luke Van Fleet (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) also had a close match a No. 2 singles, falling in a first-set tiebreaker before suffering a 7-5 setback in the second set.

The Scots were swept in the doubles matches to open the contest.

Alma will be on the road for its next three matches, starting with a trip to Albion College on Tuesday, April 11. The Scots return home on April 28 to host Olivet College in the regular-season finale.
