Box Score 2 Angola, Ind. - The Alma College baseball team split a doubleheader with Trine University on Sunday (April 9) to take three of four games against the Thunder in the weekend series. Alma was topped by Trine, 3-2, in the opening game before posting an 8-3 victory in the series finale.
Alma (8-16 overall, 6-6 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) has now won five of its last six games and is currently tied for fourth in the MIAA.
The Scots open a four-game series with defending league champion Adrian College on Friday, April 14 and will host the Bulldogs for a two-game set at Klenk Park on Saturday, April 15.
Game 1 - at Trine 3, Alma 2
The Scots opened a two-run lead in the top of the fifth, while Trine responded wth three consecutive scores, ending the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren) started the game on the mound and threw 6.1 innings, facing 27 batters and striking out four while allowing only two hits. Alma was held to four hits and was led by freshmen Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant/Davenport) and Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids). Trucks was 1-for-3 with a RBI, while Acker was 1-for-2 with a double, a RBI and a run scored.
Game 2 - Alma 8, at Trine 3
Junior Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) threw his third complete game of the season and struck out eight batters as the Scots closed out the series with a win.
Alma built a 6-0 lead after three innings and tallied 14 hits, including three by senior Greg Goffee Dexter, Mich./Dexter), who was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI.
Seniors Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher), along with freshman Jaret Koin (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) and junior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) each tallied two hits, while Thoryk scored two runs and Koin collected a pair of RBIs.
