Baseball sweeps Trine to open series

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team opened a four-game series with Trine University on Saturday (April 8) at Klenk Park, sweeping the Thunder as the Scots tallied 27 hits in two games and pushed their win streak to four. Alma (7-15 overall, 5-5 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) posted an 8-7 win in extra innings in Game 1 before tallying 10 runs in a 10-1 victory in Game 2.

Freshman Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant/Davenport) went 8-for-9 in the two games with two RBIs and two doubles while scoring three times. Trucks hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to score the winning run in the series opener.

Alma will travel to Angola, Ind., to close out the series with Trine on Sunday, April 9. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Game 1 - at Alma 8, Trine 7 (8 innings)

Max Trucks hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Alma to the extra-innings victory as the Scots overcame a three-run deficit.

Trine led, 5-2, in the middle of the fourth inning before the Scots scored three straight to tie the game. Senior Patrick Finn (Allenton, Mich./Almont) hit an RBI double to score freshman Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich./Standish-Sterling) in the bottom of the fourth, while senior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) knocked in Trucks with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, then was sent home during the next at bat to knot the game at 5-5.

Trine scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to go up 7-5, but the Scots would respond, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra baseball. Trucks scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Ben Finzel (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley/USC Salkahatchie), while Goffee tied the game after he scored on an error.

Trucks finished the game 4-for-5, while Goffee and Koin each collected three hits.

Senior Alex Valasek (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) threw 3.2 innings as the starter, striking out six batters, and was replaced by freshman Ben Blake (Sanford, Mich./Meridian), who threw 2.2 innings, allowing only one hit. Junior Garrett Miller (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West/Mott CC) picked up the win, finishing the game and facing four batters.

Game 2 - at Alma 10, Trine 1

Trucks was a perfect 4-for-4 while Alma held the Thunder to just three hits to secure their first home sweep of the season.

Senior Mike Mallory (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca) pitched his second straight complete game, striking out seven batters and giving up only two walks.

The Scots opened up the game with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, then after trading runs with Trine in the third, pulled away in the sixth with six scores.

Senior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) was 3-for-4 in the game, while Greg Goffee and junior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) each posted a pair of hits, while Goffee tallied four RBIs.
