Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team travelled to Calvin College to play out the second half of the four games series with the Knights on Monday (Apr. 24) and came away empty-handed, dropping Game 1, 1-0, and Game 2, 3-2.
Both starting pitchers for the Scots went the duration of their respective games, putting up solid numbers. Freshman Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren) started game one and went six innings allowing only five hits and fanning three Calvin batters. Riggs also escaped the loss without an earned run.
Junior Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) took the mound for game two and pitched eight innings, only allowing one hit until the one-run fifth. The two-run sixth inning by the Knights would put the game to its eventual final score.
After a tough game one, the bats started to heat up for the second. The Scots accumulated nine hits over the nine innings in game two, with freshman Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) and senior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) each reaching base twice on contact.
Senior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher College) got the second game going immediately, scoring fellow senior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) from third on a sacrifice fly ball to right field. The other run in the 3-2 loss came in the top of the sixth with a shot from junior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) to center field that would score Thoryk.
With only two four-game series remaining, the Scots sit in a three-way battle with the Knights and the Trine University Thunder for the fourth spot in the MIAA tournament. The next series for the Scots features the second-place Kalamazoo College Hornets. The first two games of the series will be on Saturday, April 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Klenk Park.
