Box Score 2 Alma, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team split its series opening doubleheader with Calvin College on Friday (April 21) at Klenk Park, winning the opening game, 1-0, with a walk-off single before the Scots had their three-game winning streak snapped to close out the day with an 18-10 loss.
Alma (11-19 overall, 9-9 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) remains in fifth place with 10 games to play in the regular season, one game behind Hope College and Trine University, which are tied for third and playing a weekend series against each other. Calvin (13-16 overall, 8-10 MIAA) sits one game behind the Scots in sixth place.
Senior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) collected a team-high four hits and three RBIs on the day, including the game-winning RBI single to give Alma a 1-0 win in Game 1.
The series with the Knights concludes on Monday, April 24, in Grand Rapids, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on the campus of Calvin College.
Game 1 - at Alma 1, Calvin 0 (8 innings)
Senior Alex Valasek (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) pitched a gem, allowing one hit as the Scots won by a 1-0 margin in extra innings. Valasek had his perfect game spoiled in the top of the sixth inning, but Goffee's heroics in the bottom of the eighth gave Alma its third straight victory.
Freshman Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich./Standish-Sterling) went 2-for-3 in the game to lead Alma's hitters, which recorded a total of five hits in the game.
Junior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) opened the bottom of the eighth with a single, then after a Calvin pitching change, Minaudo was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids). Freshman Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant/Davenport) was intentionally walked, setting up Goffee's at bat for the win.
Valasek picked up his first win of the season and struck out six batters. Calvin's Jamie Bristol pitched into the eighth inning before he was replaced by Clay Francisco.
Game 2 - Calvin 18, at Alma 10
The two teams combined for 28 runs and 31 hits as the Knights salvaged the split.
Calvin scored seven runs in the top of the third inning and chased senior Mike Mallory (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca), taking a 9-2 lead after three, then added five runs in the top of the fifth to send freshman Ben Blake (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) to the dugout and take a 14-3 advantage in the middle of the fifth.
The Scots mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs to cut the deficit to four, but Calvin pulled away in the top of the seventh, scoring four times.
Goffee and senior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central), who played in his school-record 150th career game, both went 3-for-4 and tallied two RBIs each, while Matthew Minaudo was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Jonathan Keane picked up the win on the mound for the Knights, closing the game out in the seventh inning after playing the first six innings at shortstop.
