Baseball sweeps Brits to even series

Albion, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team swept the Albion College Britons in a road doubleheader on Sunday (April 2), recording a 3-2 extra-innings win in Game 1 before closing out the four game series with a 6-3 victory.

The Scots (5-15 overall, 3-5 MIAA) split the weekend series with the Britons (9-10 2-6 MIAA), which took both games at Klenk Park on Saturday (April 1).

Alma will return to action on Friday, April 7, when it opens a four-game series against Trine University. The Scots will travel to Angola, Ind., for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday before returning to Klenk Park on Saturday, April 8 for a 1:00 p.m. start.

Game 1 - Alma 3, at Albion 2 (9 innings)

Senior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Matt Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) in the top of the ninth inning, while freshman Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren) shut the door as the Scots posted a win in extra innings.

Thoryk was 2-for-4 in the game, while freshman Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant/Davenport) went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich./Standish Sterling) also picked up a pair of hits, going 2-for-4.

Riggs picked up his first win of the year along with his first career complete game, striking out four batters and allowing eight hits in nine innings of work.

Albion took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning before Alma scored twice in the top of the fifth. Freshman Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) hit a double with one runner on to score Minaudo, then Trucks followed with a single to score Acker at the next at bat, giving the Scots a 2-1 advantage.

Albion tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and the game remained tied through seven innings, forcing the extra frames.

Game 2 - Alma 6, at Albion 3

Junior Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Monitini Catholic) threw a seven-inning complete game as the Scots posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Senior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, Jaret Koin added a pair of hits and an RBI and junior Ben Finzel (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley/USC Salkehatchie) tallied a pair of RBIs in the win.

Alma took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a 2-RBI double by Trucks, then built a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third when Adam Thoryk scored on an error by Albion's Riley Stesiak.

The Britons chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to cut the lead to 3-2, but Alma pulled away in the top of the sixth, scoring three times. Goffee and Vann Acker crossed home on another error by Stesiak, then Koin hit a two-out single to score Finzel.

Albion attempted to cut into the Scots lead, but left four runners on base over the last two innings, scoring only one run.
