Box Score 2 Alma, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team dropped both games in a series opening doubleheader with Albion College on Saturday (April 1) at Klenk Park, falling by a 9-6 margin in Game 1 before suffering a 10-5 setback in Game 2.
The Scots (3-15 overall, 1-5 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and Britons will conclude their series on Sunday, April 2, in Albion, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Game 1 - Albion 9, at Alma 6
A five-run inning by the Britons in the top of the fourth propelled Albion to a 9-6 victory.
Senior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher) went 3-for-4, while senior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and freshman Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich./Standish-Sterling) both tallied two hits.
After the Britons scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, senior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) homered over the left field fence to tie the game. four batters later, after a single by Thoryk and Koin reaching first on an error, Peczynski hit a RBI single, scoring Thoryk to give Alma a 2-1 lead.
Albion responded with a pair of runs to go ahead 3-2 in the top of the third before Alma scored three times to regain the lead at 5-3. With one out and the bases loaded, an error by Albion's Riley Stesiak allowed Peczynski to reach first, while Thoryk and junior Ben Finzel (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley/USC Salkehatchie) scored to put Alma up by a run. After Koin was caught trying to steal home, senior Patrick Finn (Allenton, Mich./Almont) gave the Scots a two-run advantage when he hit a single to centerfield, scoring Peczynski.
Albion tallied five runs in the top of the fourth to erase Alma's lead and go ahead 8-5, then held the Scots to a pair of 1-2-3 innings. Alma cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Peczynski scored after a single by junior Austin Roeske (Warren, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate), but could not overcome the Briton's lead.
Senior Alex Valasek (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) took the loss after 6.2 innings of work, recording four strikeouts, while Albion's Mitch Shedlowsky picked up the victory, throwing six innings and striking out five batters.
Game 2 - Albion 10, at Alma 5
Albion scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie and secure the sweep as each team posted 10 hits.
Greg Goffee and Patrick Finn each had a pair of hits, and each recorded a double.
Albion held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before the Scots exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Finzel started the scoring after he reach home on a throwing error, then Thoryk was sent home after a double by Peczynski. Finn sent Peczynski home with a single at the next at bat, then scored himself on a sacrifice fly by freshman Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) to give Alma a 5-3 advantage.
Albion scored a run in the top of the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game before putting five runs on the board in the ninth to go ahead for good.
Senior Mike Mallory (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca) threw for seven innings, while junior Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) took the loss, giving up six runs in two innings. Albion used three pitchers and gave up only two earned runs.
