Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team fought No. 1 Calvin College hard but came up short 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 20-25, 21-25) at Art Smith Arena on Saturday afternoon. Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) led the team in kills with 10 and was second in kill percentage at .333-percent behind Kendall Sells (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) who was tallied at .381-percent. Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) posted 20 assists and Dorothy Buening (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) had 10 digs. Laykova, Pelach and Maressa Miller (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) tallied nine digs each, one dig away from a double-double.
The first set was a competitive one - there were 10 ties and seven lead changes. Alma found itself down 21-18 and finished the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-21. Laykova and Sells each earned three kills in the first set and the Knights helped out with five errors.
Calvin tied the match by taking the second set 25-15. The third set was much like the first - there were eight ties and four lead changes. Alma was in control early in the set with a 14-10 lead. The Knights then went on a 10-2 run to take a 20-16 lead which they would hold for a 25-20 win.
The fourth set saw the Scots battle back from down 9-3 to get within one point at 17-16 and again at 20-19. But Calvin picked up five of the next seven points to take the set and the match.
Alma remains at home for its next match - it is the first time the Scots will host back-to-back matches this season. Kalamazoo comes to Art Smith Arena for a match on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
