Box Score 2 Olivet, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team completed a series sweep of Olivet College on Saturday (May 7) afternoon and in the process, climbed into second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings. Alma defeated the Comets, 6-4 in the first game before posting a 12-1 decision in the series finale.
The Scots' two wins, coupled with a loss by Hope College, gave Alma all it needed to host a first-round game in the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday, May 11. Alma's will host a nine-inning game at Klenk Park with Hope College that will begin at 4 p.m.
Junior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) finished the day with five hits and five RBIs to lead the Scots.
Game 1 - Alma 6, at Olivet 4 (7 innings)
The Scots overcame a 3-0 deficit after two innings, scoring four unanswered runs over the last four innings to get the win. Senior Blake Ordiway (Holly, Mich./Holly) picked up the win on the mound, throwing the final 4.2 innings in relief of senior Colin Nash (Brighton, Mich./Brighton). Ordiway struck out three batters and allowed only two hits to get his first win of the year.
Goffee, senior Doug Walters (Brighton, Mich./Brighton), and sophomore Austin Roeske (Warren, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) each recorded a pair of hits in the win, while Goffee tallied three RBIs with a triple in the top of the fourth inning to put the Scots ahead for good.
Senior Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler, Mich./Breckenridge/Kellogg CC) added an insurance run with a RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to score Walters.
Game 2 - Alma 12, at Olivet 1 (9 innings)
The Scots opened the game with a 11-0 advantage after six innings en route to the sweep. Senior Phil Jock (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) worked the mound for six innings to get his fifth win of the year.
Goffee was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while four other Scots notched multiple hits to help Alma to a 14-hit game. Junior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) tallied two doubles and a pair of RBIs as the Scots recorded five extra-base hits. Roeske led the team with three RBIs.
