Box Score 2 Albion, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team completed a four-game sweep of the Albion College Britons on Sunday (April 3), taking a pair of games at Frank Joranko Field on the Albion College campus. The Scots won the first game by a 3-2 margin before completing the weekend series with a 7-4 victory in game two.
With the wins, the Scots improved their record to 16-3 overall, including a 7-1 mark in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Alma has now won its last seven games as well as 15 of its last 16 outings. The Scots have now taken the first two series in the MIAA schedule and sit atop the MIAA standings with an .875 winning percentage.
Junior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher) was 4-for-8 for the day to lead Alma while the Scots' starting pitchers were able to go deep into each game before relying on the bullpen.
Game 1 - Alma 3, at Albion 2 (7 innings)
The Scots took their third straight game from the Brits with a 3-2 victory. Thoryk went 2-for-3 in the game while senior Matt Launstein (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) picked up the win on the mound, striking out seven batters and allowing only one earned run in 5.2 innings of work.
Alma took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior Doug Walters (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) hit a RBI single to score senior David Carles (Staten Island, N.Y./Petrides/College of Staten Island). Walters crossed the plate three batters later on a wild pitch.
In the top of the sixth inning, Thoryk scored off of a sacrifice fly by senior Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler, Mich./Breckenridge/Kellogg CC) to increase the Scots' lead to 3-0. Albion tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull within two heading into the final frame.
After a 1-2-3 inning for Alma in the top of the seventh, the bottom half of the inning was tense for the Scots. Albion was able put runners on first and second with one out before Spencer Bonofiglio hit an RBI single, pulling the Brits within one run and putting runners on first and third. The next batter reached first on a fielder's choice, but the tying run was thrown out at home by sophomore Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic), who came in during the sixth inning to relieve Launstein. Frontzak walked the next batter to load the bases with two outs before closing out the game with a strikeout to complete his third save of the season.
The Scots collected just five hits in the win while Albion was able to connect on 10 hits. Alma forced the Brits to strand 13 runners on base.
Game 2 - Alma 7, at Albion 4 (9 innings)
Thoryk compiled his second multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-5 with a double, as the Scots defeated the Brits, 7-4, to close out the series. Senior P Colin Nash (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) improved his record to 3-0 for the season, working five innings on the mound.
Alma jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four hits in the first inning en route to the win. Junior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) got the hitting going with a double before sophomore Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) connected on a double to send Goffee home. Walters made it three straight hits with a RBI single to score Minaudo, then crossed home plate himself on a wild pitch two batters later. Thoryk added the fourth run when he was sent home on a RBI single by junior Patrick Finn (Allenton, Mich./Almont).
Albion tried to crawl back in the middle stages of the game, pulling to within two runs after five innings of play. With the score 6-4 entering the sixth inning, the Alma defense held Albion hitless for the rest of the game and added an insurance run in the eighth when senior Yoan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y./Morris/Monroe College) singled to score Thoryk.
Senior Blake Ordiway (Holly, Mich./Holly) picked up his second save of the year as the closer, pitching the final four innings to seal the victory.
Alma will face Trine University next weekend in a four-game series. On Saturday, April 9, the Scots will travel to Angola, Ind., for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader with the Thunder, while on Sunday, April 10, the two teams will face each other in a twin bill that begins at 1:00 p.m. at Klenk Park on the Alma College campus.
