Angola, Ind. - The Alma College men's tennis team wrapped up the 2016 season with a victory on Friday (April 29) afternoon, sweeping host Trine University by a 9-0 margin. The Scots finish the season with an 8-8 record, including a 3-4 mark in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to place fifth in the league standings.
The Scots opened the match with a sweep of the doubles competitions, then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
At No. 2 singles, junior Grant Hill (Caro, Mich./Caro) defeated Trine's Victor Flynn in a super-tiebreaker, 10-3, after splitting the first two sets. Sophomore Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) and junior Damien Arthur (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) both had first-set tiebreaker victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, then went on to win their matches in the second set.
The Scots finished the season with a pair of shutouts and blanked three conference opponents this season. Alma graduates two seniors - Chad Barnhart (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) and Jared Guy (Portland, Mich./Portland) from this year's squad.
