Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss at Calvin College on Monday (April 25) afternoon as the Scots opened a three-match week to close out the 2016 regular-season. Alma is now 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with two matches remaining on the schedule.
Alma's lone point came at No. 4 singles, where sophomore Luke Van Fleet (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) defeated Calvin's Taylor Asfour, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The final score was misleading as there were a number of close matches, including two other singles matchups that went into a third set.
Sophomore Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) dropped the first set against Jason Wolters at No. 5 singles, but rallied to win the second set, 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Ackerman fell by an 11-9 margin in the third set. At No. 2 singles, junior Bryan Schutte (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) also forced a third set, winning the second frame 6-2 after dropping the first set, 6-4. In the third set, Calvin's David Brown captured the victory, 6-3.
The three doubles matches were also competitive, including the No. 3 doubles team of Ackerman and junior Grant Hill (Caro, Mich./Caro), which fell by a 9-7 margin to Walters and Andrew Airgood from Calvin. The other two doubles teams from Alma suffered 8-6 defeats.
The Scots will return home on Wednesday, April 27, to host Albion College in their final home match of the season. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Alma College Tennis Courts.
