Box Score 2 Alma, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team completed a four-game series sweep of Calvin College on Monday (April 25) afternoon, winning both ends of a doubleheader at Klenk Park. The Scots won by a 6-1 margin in game one, then posted a 4-3 victory in the finale.
With the wins, Alma moved into a tie for fourth place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with eight games remaining. The Scots own a 12-8 mark in the MIAA to match Trine University. Both teams sit one game out of second place, which is shared by Kalamazoo College and Hope College, which have 13-7 marks. Adrian College is in first place with a 17-3 record.
In addition, the Scots picked up their 21st win of the season, becoming the third team in school history to record 20 or more wins in a campaign. Alma is also guaranteed a winning season for the first time since 1981 - a span of 36 seasons.
The Scots will travel to Northwood University on Tuesday, April 26, to face the Timberwolves in a single non-conference game beginning at 4:00 p.m. Alma returns to MIAA play on Saturday, April 30, hosting Kalamazoo College to open a four-game series with the Hornets. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Klenk Park, where Alma College baseball alumni will be recognized in between games.
Game 1 - at Alma 6, Calvin 1
Senior Colin Nash (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) gave up just three hits as the Alma defense held Calvin College to one run in a 6-1 victory. Sophomore Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) went 3-for-4 in the victory with an RBI, while sophomore Austin Roeske (Warren, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Scots opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when junior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) hit an RBI single, scoring senior Yoan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y./Morris/Monroe College), who opened the inning with a double. Peczynski was sent home when Roeske hit an RBI single to center field.
The Knights responded with a run in the top of the third, but Alma came back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning when senior Doug Walters (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) scored on a sacrifice fly by De La Rosa to take a 3-1 lead.
The Scots scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Minaudo hit an RBI single, scoring Peczynski, then completed the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler, Mich./Breckenridgs/Kellogg CC) opened the inning with a double to left center, then eventually scored on a balk by Calvin pitcher Sawyer Howard. Alma made it 6-1 when Roeske stole second and junior Dalvin Ramos (Chicago, Ill./Morton College) scored on the throw home.
Nash picked up his fifth win of the year, striking out four of the 29 batters he faced.
Game 2 - at Alma 4, Calvin 3
The Scots completed the sweep of the Knights with a 4-3 victory in the series finale. Walters, Peczynski, and Roeske all registered two hits in the win, while Peczynski recorded two RBIs.
Senior Phil Jock (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) got the win with 6.2 innings of work, striking out four batters. Senior Blake Ordiway (Holly, Mich./Holly) picked up his third save of the year, throwing the final 2.1 innings.
Alma took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Walters hit an RBI single, scoring junior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter). The Scots made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when Peczynski singled to right-center field, scoring De La Rosa.
Calvin cut the lead to one run with a score in the top of the sixth inning, but Alma responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. After a leadoff single by Walters, De La Rosa hit a double to left field that scored Walters, then Peczynski singled to right center to score De La Rosa two at bats later to make the score 4-1.
The Knights put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning, but the Alma defense was able to hold on for the series sweep.
