Box Score 2 Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team got its bats going and played solid defense in the series opener at Cavin College, sweeping the Knights in both games of a doubleheader on Friday (April 22). With the pair of wins, the Scots improved to 19-10 overall and 10-8 in the MIAA.
Alma is now one win away from becoming the third team in school history to record 20 wins, and sits four wins shy of the school-record of 23 wins, set by the 1981 squad.
The Scots will host the Knights in the series finale on Monday, April 26, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Klenk Park on the campus of Alma College.
Game 1 - Alma 2, at Calvin 1 (8 innings)
Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler, Mich./Breckenridge/Kellogg CC) hit an RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to score Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher) and give the Scots a 2-1 victory over host Calvin College.
The win also snapped a five-game losing streak for Alma, which had dropped seven of its last eight games entering the Calvin series.
Junior Alex Valasek (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) went wire-to-wire on the mound, holding the Knights to just three hits and recording eight strikeouts for the second straight game.
Calvin got on the board first in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI double by Nate DeZwann before the Scots tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Doug Walters (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) hit a single to left-center field, and an error by the outfielder allowed junior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) to score from second base.
In the final inning, a hit by senior Yoan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y./Morris/Monroe College) put runners on first and third base, then the bases were loaded after junior Patrick Finn (Allenton, Mich./Almont) was walked, setting up San Miguel's at-bat. De La Rosa finished the game 3-for-4, tying a career-high for hits in a game.
Game 2 - Alma 8, at Calvin 0 (7 innings)
Junior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) went 3-for-4 as the Scots poured on the offense, shutting out Calvin with an 8-0 victory. Senior Matt Launstein (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) pitched the entire game and snapped a two-game losing streak. He also struck out four batters while keeping Calvin to six hits.
Four other Alma players recorded multiple hits in the game as the Scots registered 13 hits against the Knights' pitching staff.
Alma scored first, tallying three runs in the top of the third inning. San Miguel started the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on the next at bat when Peczynski singled to right-center field. Finn walked in the next-at bat, then sophomore Austin Roeske (Warren, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) put down a sacrifice bunt to advance both Peczynski and Finn into scoring position. Sophomore Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) hit Peczynski home with a single down the right field line, while Finn crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
The Scots added to their lead the top of the fourth inning when Roeske hit an RBI single to score Peczynski, who had opened the inning with a single down the right field line. Alma continued their offensive surge with a run in the top of the fifth when Walters scored on a RBI single by San Miguel. The Scots then made it 7-0 in the top of the sixth when Goffee hit an RBI double to score junior Dalvin Ramos (Chicago, Ill./North Grand/Morton College), while Walters hit a single down the right field line to score Goffee.
Peczynski completed the scoring in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer to left field.
