Box Score 2 Adrian, Mich. - The Alma College suffered defeated in both ends of a road double header on Sunday (April 17) at Nicolay Field on the campus of Adrian College. The Scots now own a record of 17-10 overall and an even 8-8 mark in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Alma, which has dropped its last five games, sits in fifth place as the teams enter the second half of the conference season, six games out of first place and just one game out of fourth. The top four teams qualify for the MIAA Tournament.
Junior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and senior David Carles (Staten Island, N.Y./Petrides/College of Staten Island) tallied five hits in the two games, while senior Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler, Mich./Breckenridge/Kellogg CC) registered a pair of hits in each game.
Game 1 - at Adrian 6, Alma 1
Peczynski recorded a pair of doubles, while San Miguel notched two hits as the Scots outhit the Bulldogs by an 8-7 margin.
Adrian built up a 5-0 lead after two innings before the Scots got on the board in the top of the third when junior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough/St. John Fisher) hit an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Carles.
The Bulldogs tallied another run in the bottom of the stanza to complete the scoring.
Senior Colin Nash (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) threw for 2.1 innings and gave up all six runs in his first loss of the season, while senior Blake Ordiway (Holly, Mich./Holly) pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief, registering four strikeouts and holding Adrian scoreless.
Game 2 - at Adrian 14, Alma 10
After being held to just two runs in the games against Adrian, the Scots got the bats going in the final game of the series, recording 14 hits and scoring 10 runs for their highest run total in nine games.
Carles led all hitters in the game with a career-high four hits, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Peczynski also went 3-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs, while Sam Miguel and Thoryk recorded multi-hit outings.
After the Scots opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first, Adrian scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-2 lead heading into the third. Alma got the offense going and regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third and fourth innings, despite leaving a total of five runners on base in the two stanzas. The Bulldogs responded with seven straight runs to lead by a 12-6 margin after six innings.
After scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, the Scots entered the ninth inning down 14-8 and mounted a rally that was cut short when senior Doug Walters (Brighton, Mich./Brighton), who represented the tying run, hit a fielder's choice that stranded three runners.
San Miguel started the inning with a double, then scored on the next play when Peczynski hit a double to left field. After an Adrian pitching change, Peczynski scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Yoan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y./Morris/Monroe College). Alma put two on the bases before another Bulldog pitching change, then Carles loaded the bags with Scots after he hit a single to left field, setting up Walters' at-bat.
Senior Matt Launstein (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) was credited with the loss after pitching for four innings and recording five strikeouts. Freshman Bailey O'Keefe (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) and sophomore Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic) pitched the final four innings in relief.
Alma will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday, April 22, to open a four-game series with the Calvin College Knights, playing a doubleheader at the Calvin College baseball field. On Monday, April 25, the two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader at Klenk Park on the Alma College campus.
