Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to visiting Hope College on Saturday (April 16) afternoon at the Alma College Tennis Courts. The defeat dropped the Scots to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
The match was highly competitive in the three doubles flights, where Alma picked up its lone point. The top doubles team of senior Jared Guy (Portland, Mich./Portland) and junior Bryan Schutte (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) defeated the Flying Dutchmen duo of Michael Kiley and Andrew Kline, 8-2, to get the match started.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of junior Damien Arthur (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and sophomore Luke Van Fleet (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) fell by a 9-7 margin to the Dutch's Christian Rhoades and Mark VanderStoep, while at No. 3 doubles, junior Grant Hill (Caro, Mich./Caro) and sophomore Noah Ackerman (Munising, Mich./Munising) lost in a tiebreaker to Hope's Sam Kreps and Justin Folkert.
After falling in the tight doubles matches, Alma suffered straight set defeats in five of the six singles flights. At the top singles spot, Guy battled Hope's Kiley to a tiebreaker, falling by a 10-7 margin in the extra frame.
Alma will be idle until Monday, April 25, when it travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., to face Calvin College. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
