Baseball drops pair of home games to Adrian

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team suffered a pair of home losses on Saturday (April 16 ) afternoon to Adrian College, the defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion. The Scots dropped to 17-8 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA, while the Bulldogs increased their first place lead and now own a 17-8 mark, including a 12-2 record in league play.

Senior David Carles (Staten Island, N.Y./Petrides/College of Staten Island) went 4-for-6 and accounted for four of Alma's 10 runs in the two-game set as the Scots were limited to one run.

Game 1 - Adrian 17, at Alma 0 (7 innings)

The Scots were were shutout for the first time in MIAA play, falling 17-0 to the Bulldogs. Carles went 2-for-2 as Alma was held to five hits.

Adrian's Jeff Gertly hit a first-inning grand slam to put the Bulldogs up by a 4-0 margin. Adrian added three runs in the second and scored in every inning en route to the series-opening victory.

Senior Phil Jock (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) took the loss and was pulled after 1.1 innings. The Scots used five pitchers in the game. Tommy Parsons was credited with the win for Adrian after throwing for six innings.

Game 2 - Adrian 18, at Alma 1 (9 innings)

The Scots were within striking distance, down a pair of runs after three innings, and kept the Bulldogs at bay through the middle innings. Adrian exploded for 15 runs in the final two innings to pull away and secure the road sweep.

Carles was 2-for-4, while sophomore Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) also recorded a pair of hits in his four at-bats while adding an RBI.

Alma's lone run came in the bottom of the third inning when Minaudo singled to left field, scoring senior Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler, Mich./Breckenridge/Kellogg CC).

Junior Alex Valasek (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) took his first loss of the season and threw for seven innings, striking out eight batters.

The Scots will conclude the series with Adrian on Sunday, April 17, with a doubleheader at Nicolay Field on the campus of Adrian College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
