Baseball defeated Albion in both games of today's double header

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College baseball team hosted Albion College in the first double header of a four game series in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action this afternoon (Apr. 1). Alma defeated Albion 5-4 in the first game and 11-2 in the second game. 

At the end of the afternoon Alma improved to 14-3 on the season and are now 5-1 in the conference. Alma's win streak has moved to six and the Scots have won 13 of their last 14 games. Albion dropped to 7-11 on their overall season and fell to 0-6 in the league.

Game One:

Alma brought the first three Albion batters down in the top of the first then put up four runs in the bottom of the frame. Alma had six hits in the inning and it started with lead off hitter David Carles (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a single. Junior Greg Goffee (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) had a strong at bat to walk. Sophomore Matt Minaudo (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) singled to load the bases. 

With one out, junior Adam Thoryk (Syracuse, N.Y./St. John Fisher) knocked a two RBI single. Senior Yoan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) followed right behind with an RBI single. A second out was recorded then junior Patrick Finn (Allentown, Mich./Almont) had an RBI single to left field. The Britons were finally able to record one more out and Alma took the quick 4-0 lead.

Alma brought down the next three again in the top of the second inning and recorded another run in the bottom of the second. Lead off Carles reached on an error then Minaudo singled to score Carles and increase Alma's lead, 5-0.

Albion went on a rally in the top of the fourth inning. On four hits the Britons notched four runs but the Scots managed to stop the rally and strand two Briton runners. Neither team scored the rest of the game and Alma walked away with the 5-4 victory.

Senior Phil Jock (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) was on the mound for the Scots in game one. He pitched a complete game, fanning 10 batters recording a season high in strikeouts. His pitching record improved to 3-2 this season. 

Game Two:

Albion got off to a solid start in the second game of the day, crossing the plate twice in the top of the first inning. Alma recorded a hit but Albion stranded the runner on first to go in to the second inning with the 2-0 lead.

Alma tied the game up in the bottom of the third inning notching two runs of their own. Senior Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler, Mich./Breckenridge) hit a lead off triple and junior Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) followed, grounding out to the short stop but getting an RBI scoring San Miguel. Alma left the third inning tying the game up 2-2. 

Alma continued the hitting streak in the bottom of the fourth inning crossing the plate five more times. De La Rosa had a lead off walk, Finn singled to left field and then San Miguel hit a two RBI double scoring the two runners. With still no outs, Peczynski recorded a single bunt and Carles was next with a two RBI double of his own. Carles stole third base then Goffee knocked an RBI single to score Carles. There were three consecutive outs for Alma but they took the lead at 7-2 through four innings.

Alma brought down the first three Albion batters in the fifth inning then pushed their lead margin even farther in the bottom of the frame. On four hits and two Briton errors Alma notched three more runs for the 10-2 lead but the Britons managed to strand two Scot runners.

Alma brought down the first three batters in both the sixth and seventh inning and picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Peczynski doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on a wild pitch to give Alma the 11-2 lead. 

Alma's defense prevailed in the last two innings and the Scots walked away with the 11-2 victory in the second game of the double header.

Minaudo went 4-4 in the second game and recorded one RBI. Carles paced the team with three RBI's as he went 2-4 and crossed the plate two times. San Miguel went extra bases going 2-3 with one triple and one double. 

Alma will travel to Albion College tomorrow (Apr. 2) for the second doubleheader of the four game series. The first pitch is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
