Battle Creek, Mich. - The Alma College men's golf team is in seventh place out of eight teams after the first day of the MIAA Fall Golf Championship, held at the Battle Creek Country Club. The Scots shot a score of 328 (+40) as a team, six strokes shy of Trine University, which is in sixth after the first day with a score of 322.
Senior Alec Genter (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) led Alma and tied for 13th with a 77 (+5) during the first round, while sophomore Kyle Bodkins (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) is tied for 28th with a +9 81. Freshman Mitchell Haines (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) and freshman Sam Struble (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth) tied with identical scores of 85 (+13), while sophomore Bennett Schmitt (Frankfort, Mich./Frankfort) finished with an 87 (+15).
Calvin College leads the field after the first day with a team score of 297, while Hope College trails by one stroke with 298 after 18 holes. Kalamazoo College is in third place with a score of 300.
The Scots will wrap up the 2016 season on Saturday, Oct. 8, with the final 18 holes at the Battle Creek Country Club.
