Box Score 2 On Sunday afternoon, the Alma College Baseball team concluded their 2015 season with a home doubleheader against Albion College at Klenk Park. The Scots took game one by a score of 12-3 before losing the nightcap 14-6.
With the split, Alma finished the 2015 season with an overall record of 20-20 and 11-17 in the MIAA, while Albion ended the campaign at 19-21 and 12-16 in the league.
It was Senior Day 2015 as the program honored five departing players - Juan Dominguez (New York, NY/Blue Ridge), Kyle Gorski (West Bloomfield/Orchard Lake St. Mary's), Blake Leddy (Saginaw, Swan Valley), Roddy MacNeil (Brethren/Brethren) and Eric Strickler (Lapeer/Lapeer East).
Game One: Alma 12, Albion 3
In the opener, Alma hit the ball well and received good pitching and solid fielding to defeat the Britons by a score of 12-3. Albion scored single runs in the first and second innings off Alma Jr. Philp Jock (Wales/Memphis) and their final tally in the top of the seventh off of MacNeil when the outcome was basically determined.
The Scots scored five runs on five hits with two Albion errors in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Jr. DH David Carles (Staten Island/Petrides) and Leddy tripled to make it a 2-1 game. Then, Dominguez tripled to the right center fence and scored on a throwing error at third base.
The Scots added two more runs in the frame on RBI's by So. SS Alex Peczynksi (Farmington Hills/Detroit Catholic Central) and Jr. C Doug Walters (Brighton/Brighton) as Alma had a 5-2 lead after two.
In the bottom of the third, Carles singled and stole second with one out. Leddy followed with his second double of the game, scoring Carles for a 6-2 lead.
Four more runs were plated by the Scots in the bottom half of the fourth frame on four hits and they were helped by two more Albion miscues. Jr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Peczynski recorded a bunt single for an RBI to go ahead 7-2.
The other runs for Alma were knocked in by Jr. 3B Dayne San Miguel (Breckenridge/Breckenridge), who had two on a single, and Leddy who recorded one on a ground ball.
The final two runs of game for the Scots came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Walters walked and Jr. CF Jose Corniel (Bronx, NY/Norman Thomas) tripled to score the first and that was followed by a So. DH Pat Finn (Allentown/Almont) ground out that made it 12-2.
Game Two: Albion 14, Alma 6
The nightcap didn't go as well for the Scots as Albion scored early to take a commanding lead and id not look back, eventually defeating Alma 14-6.
The Britons scored five earned runs on seven hits in the first three innings against Alma starting Jr. P Colin Nash (Brighton/Brighton). The Scots finally responded when Leddy blasted a homerun, his and the team's second of the year, to right centerfield to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The big blow of the game came in the top of the sixth when the Britons scored seven time off of two Scots relief pitchers - Jr. Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) and Strickler. That ballooned the game to 12-1, but the Scots would answer in their half of the sixth.
Alma scored two runs to make it 12-3 and had a chance for more, leaving the bases loaded. Dominguez got an RBI on a walk, while PH Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township/De La Salle) also received an RBI when he was hit by a pitch.
Albion added two additional runs off Gorski, who came on relief in the top of the seventh. That made the score 14-3 and the Scots' season was down to the final three outs. As is the norm, the home team would not go down quietly.
Alma scored three runs on four hits with the RBI's coming from Dominguez and Minaudo (two), while the last out of the season came on a line drive shot to the third baseman by So. 2B Jerome Jackson (Harper Woods/Harper Woods).
On the afternoon, Leddy finished five of eight with a homerun, two doubles and four RBI's. Dominguez finished with three RBI's, while Corniel was three for five with two runs scored. In addition, Walters was three for six with three runs scored.
In addition to the ceremony that honored the five seniors, the Scots had two special moments with a first pitch being thrown before each contest. Before the first game, Matt DesRochers, an Alma alumni with a degree in Biology and a United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate, did the honors.
The nightcap saw Lynn Hahn, a 1957 Alma graduate, throw out the first pitch. He majored in Chemistry and minored in Mathematics as a Scot and is a member of the Alma College Hall of Fame for his successes in baseball and football on campus. He is also a proud Korean War veteran, where he served from 1952 and 1953.
