Baseball sweeps Albion on the road Friday afternoon by scores of 5-0 and 2-1

The Alma College Baseball team hit the road and traveled to Albion College as they took on the Britons of Albion College in the last MIAA series of the regular season. Alma took both games of the doubleheader as they won game one 2-1 and shut Albion out game two 5-0.

At the end of the day Alma increase their overall season record to 19-19 and 10-16 in the MIAA while Albion fell to 18-20 on the season and 11-15 in the MIAA.

Game One: Alma 2, Albion 1

Game one remained scoreless through one inning, but Alma came out with bats swinging in the top of the second as they took their first and only needed lead of the game. After a strikeout and groundout Jr. OF Jose Corniel (Bronx, NY/Norman Thomas) singled to left field, stole second then a double down the right field line from Fr. IF Adam Thoryk (Phoenix, NY / John C. Birdlebaugh) scored the runner giving Alma the 1-0 run.

Alma held the Britons in the bottom of the second then in the top of the third with no outs Alma looked to put another run on the board as lead off Jr. IF Doug Walters (Brighton/Brighton) earned his walk, Jr. IF Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler/Breckenridge) followed as he reached on an error. Corniel singled down the left field line but Alma came up short, as they were unable to score in the bottom of three keeping the score at 1-0 Alma. 

The Britons put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning knotting the score 1-1 after four but only scored one as they left one runner on base in scoring position.

Alma looked to answer again in the top of the fifth. Lead off batter Fr. IF Austin Ruske reached on a double to center field and landed on third after a wild pitch. After one out, So. Alex Peczynski blasted one to center field for an RBI double bringing the score 2-1. Walters followed and landed on base after being hit by pitch putting runners on both first and second. San Miguel grounded out but putting the ball in play advanced the runners. A strikeout ended the inning but not before Alma regained the 2-1 lead. 

Stranding one in the bottom of the fifth Alma kept their 2-1 lead. Looking into the top of the sixth with just one out, Thoryk singled to left center. A double bomb to center field from Sr. IF Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) put runners in scoring position on second and third base. Fr. IF Austin Ruske (Warren/Warren De La Salle) loaded the bases after earning a walk but Albion managed to strand three runners on base leaving the score 2-1 through six.

Albion was unable to answer in the bottom of the sixth as Jr. Matt Launstein (Flushing/Flushing) struck one out and brought the other two into groundouts. 

Alma wasn't able to answer in the top of the seventh but kept Albion to no runs and Alma took game one 2-1.

Launstein was on the mound for the Scots as he pitched a complete game allowing one run on four hits, all while tallying six strikeouts on the day. Launstein now improves his record to 2-2 on the season.

Peczynski and Thoryk tallied the only two RBI's of game one as Corniel notched another stolen base on the year.

Game Two: Alma 5, Albion 0

As the guests again, the Scots saw themselves first to at bat, and with only one out Alma looked to take game two as Peczynski reached first but the Britons stranded one on base in the top of the first. 

So. P Alex Valasek (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic Central) struck out two in the bottom of the first and Alma attempted to put the first run on the board as they went into the top of the second.  Jr. OF David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) led off with a single to left field and stole second putting himself in scoring position. Three consecutive outs ended the inning for the Scots keeping the game scoreless. 

With two outs Alma put themselves on the board in the top of the third inning. Jr. Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) reached on a walk, stole second, and reached third on a wild pitch. Walters reached on an error all while allowing Delrosa to cross the plate taking the 1-0 lead after the top of the third.

In the top of the fourth with one out Corniel knocked another single to left field, stole second. Two outs on the board and Leddy walked putting runners on first and second. A pop up to the second baseman ended the inning keeping the Alma lead at 1-0. Valasek struck out two in the bottom of the fourth inning. 

One out in the top of the fifth and Peczynski hit a single. Walters followed with a double down the right field line scoring Peczynski giving Alma the 2-0 lead. A walk and wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. A sacrifice fly from Carles scored a runner bringing game two 3-0.

In the top of the sixth inning with one out Leddy hit a single up the middle putting the first runner on base for the top half of the inning. Two outs and Delrosa earned the RBI single scoring Leddy. A second out for the Scots as Peczynski knocked an RBI single scoring another runner giving Alma the 5-0 lead. A final out ended the inning but Alma aimed to keep the shut out as they moved into the bottom of the sixth inning. 

The Scots retired the Albion line up in the bottom of the sixth inning and they looked to increase their sizeable lead for the last time in the top of the seventh inning.

Alma was unable to notch another run on the board in the top of the seventh but Alma defense prevailed as the Scots walked away with the 5-0 victory after seven innings. 

Valasek also pitched a complete game allowing no runs on four hits and striking out seven through seven. After the day, Valasek increased his record to 3-3 on the year. 

Delarosa, Peczynski, Walters, and Carles all had one RBI a piece in the 5-0 Alma Scots victory. 

The Alma College Baseball team will host their final home game of the 2015 season on Sunday, May 03, in a Senior Day debut at home as they again take on the Albion Britons in a double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
