Box Score 2 The Alma College Baseball team continued conference play on Friday, traveling to Indiana to take on Trine University (IN) in a doubleheader at Jannen Field. In two extremely close contests, the Scots would drop both games of the twinbill to the Thunder by scores of 1-0 and 3-2.
With the loses, Alma drops to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in MIAA action. The Thunder improve to 9-12 overall with a 5-5 mark in league play with the two victories.
Game One: Trine 1 Alma 0
The Scots would be unable to land any baserunners in the top of the first, while Trine only managed one hit in the bottom of the inning. After one, the score remained 0-0.
The inning summary read the same in the second inning for both teams and game stayed scoreless after two.
Neither team would be able to manufacture a hit in the third and the scoreboard still showed zeroes going in to the fourth inning.
Alma got its first scoring opportunity of the game in the fifth, when Jr. IF Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler/Breckenridge) singled to to center with one out. Jr. OF/C Jose Corniel (Bronx, NY/Norman Thomas) followed with a walk to give the Scots two men on with just one out in the inning. Alma ended the inning with a fly out and a strike out to leave both runners stranded, keeping the score at 0-0 heading in to the bottom of the inning.
The team managed to bring one runner across in the bottom of the fifth to take the 1-0 lead with two innings remaining.
So. OF Pat Finn (Allentown/Almont) recorded a single in the sixth, before being caught stealing to give Alma two outs. Sr. OF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) followed with a walk but would be left on first after a fly out ended the inning.
The Scots kept the Thunder off the board in the bottom of the sixth, giving themselves a chance to win it in the seventh.
With two outs in the seventh, Alma recorded back-to-back walks to put the winning run on first. The Scots would be unable to capitalize, ending the inning with a strikeout, to take the loss in game one 1-0.
Finn and San Miguel recorded the only two hits for Alma, both going 1-for-3 from the plate.
On the mound, Jr. LHP Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis) (3-3) got the loss after allowing one run on five hits and three walks.
Game Two: Trine 3 Alma 2
Finn led off the game with a single, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. He would then move to third on a groundout by Jr. C Doug Walters (Brighton/Brighton) but would be left on third following an inning-ending groundout.
The Thunder would get on the board first in game two, putting up a run in the bottom of the first to take the early 1-0 lead.
With the score still 1-0 in the third, Delrosa would earn an RBI, scoring Fr. IF Austin Roeske (Warren/Warren De La Salle) from second, to knot the score at 1-1 going in to the bottom on the inning.
In the top of the fifth, So. IF Adam Thoryk (Phoenix, NY/John C. Birdlebaugh) led off with a single, before Roeske singled to center to give Alma two men on with no outs. Both runners would advance off a sacrifice by Finn. Delrosa walked to load the bases, before Walters grounded out to the pitcher to score pinch runner So. IF Jerome Jackson (Harper Woods/Harper Woods) to put the Scots up 2-1.
Alma held the 2-1 lead until the bottom of the sixth, before Trine put two runs on the board to take the 3-2 lead heading in to the top of the seventh.
The Scots would only land one runner on in the final inning to drop game two 3-2 on the road.
Delrosa and Walters each collected a RBI in game two, while Sr. OF Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) and Roeske both recorded doubles.
Jr. RHP Colin Nash (Brighton/Brighton) falls to 2-3 on the year after giving up three runs (three earned) on nine hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
The Scots face Trine again tomorrow, April 4, at home in a doubleheader set to start at 1:00 p.m.
