Box Score 2 After playing the last two doubleheaders on the road, the Alma College Baseball team returned to Klenk Park on Saturday for a twinbill against Hope College. The Scots would take both games on the afternoon, winning game one 3-0, before taking game two 4-3 on a bottom of the seventh RBI by Jr. IF Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler/Breckenridge).
Following Saturday's action, Alma now sits at 17-19 overall with an 8-6 mark in the MIAA. The Flying Dutchmen drop to 19-16 on the year and 12-12 in league play with the two loses.
Game One: Alma 3 Hope 0
Hope led off the first game with a single, but Jr. P Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis) would close the door with back-to-back strikeouts to keep the visitors off the board.
Sr. OF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) led off the bottom of the first with a single, before advancing to second off a sacrifice bunt by from So. IF Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Catholic Central). Delrosa would then steal third and Jr. C Doug Walters (Brighton/Brighton) followed by reaching first after getting hit by a pitch to give Alma two men on with only one out. The next batter would hit in to a double play to leave both men stranded, keeping the score at 0-0.
Jock kept dealing in the second, striking out out two more batters to keep the score at 0-0 heading in to the bottom of the inning.
Jr. OF David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) led off the bottom of the second with a single and would advance to third following a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. With two outs, Fr. IF Austin Roeske (Warren/Warren De La Salle) would bring in Carles with a single to give Alma its first lead of the afternoon 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Scots stepped to the plate looking to seal the game. Peczynski singled before being brought home with a double by Walters. Jr. OF Erick Cruz (Brooklyn, NY/Colegio Juan XXIII) then came in to pinch hit and connected on a single to bring in Walters to put Alma up 3-0 with one inning remaining.
Alma would limit Hope to just one hit in the top of the seventh to get the 3-0 victory in game one.
Walters, Cruz and Roeske accounted for the three Scots RBI, while Delrosa added a stolen base to go along with one hit.
On the mound, Jock improved to 4-5 on the year after recording seven strikeouts in a six-hit shutout.
Game Two: Alma 4 Hope 3
Hope jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first to go up 3-0.
Delrosa led off the bottom of the first with a single, before being moved to second thanks to a Peczynski single to right field. Following a double play and a groundout, both runners would be left stranded with the score remaining at 3-0.
With the score still tied at 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Scots came to bat looking to even things up. Following a strikeout, Corniel was hit by a pitch to take first, before stealing second base to give Alma one man on with one out. Delrosa was also hit by a pitch and then he and Corniel both advanced on an error on the catcher. Pecsynski walked to load the bases, then Walters reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second on an error that would score Corniel and Delrosa. San Miguel followed with a double to score Walters and Alma knotted the game at 3-3.
Both teams would land baserunners in the sixth, both neither side was able to cash in and the score remained knotted at 3-3.
Hope recorded two hits in the top of the seventh, but failed to put any runs on the board.
Delrosa led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle, before advancing to second after a sacrifice bunt. Walters was intentionally walked, giving the Scots two runners on with just one out. San Miguel then stepped to the plate and connected on a single to left field to score Delrosa from second, giving Alma the 4-3 come-from-behind victory in game two.
San Miguel went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including the game winner. Delrosa went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Walters added the other RBI.
On the hill, Sr. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) improved to 4-1 on the season after allowing no runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of relief.
The Scots return to action on Friday, May 1, traveling to take on Albion College in a doubleheader set to start at 2:00 p.m.
