Riding a five-game losing streak, the Alma College Men's Tennis team looked to right the ship on Thursday when they welcomed Trine University (IN) to campus for a match at the Superior Street Tennis Complex.
It went down the wire in this MIAA matchup, with Jr. Jared Guy (Portland/Portland) earning the three-set victory at second singles to give the Scots the slim 5-4 victory at home.
"This was a great comeback for our kids and we really fought hard this afternoon," said Alma Head Coach Chris Sandro. "To be down like we were and then win the final three matches was really exciting for everyone. It came down to the three set win by Jared and it was really nice to see the guys so pumped afterwards - they deserve it!"
The duo So. Bryan Schutte (Jenison/Jenison) and Guy got Alma on the board first with a 8-3 win at first doubles.
Following a loss at second doubles, the tandem of So. Grant Hill (Caro/Caro) and So. Damien Arthur (Allegan/Allegan) gave the Scots the lead back 2-1 with an 8-6 victory at third position.
Trine would win the next three singles matches to go up 4-2, before Alma would rattle off three-consecutive victories to get the 5-4 win.
Fr. Noah Ackerman (Munising/Munising) claimed victory at sixth position 6-2,6-4 and he was followed by a win at fifth position by Fr. Luke Van Fleet (Rockford/Rockford) 6-0,1-6,6-3 to knot the score at 4-4 with one singles match remaining.
Guy brought home the win for the Scots at second position, earning the 1-6,6-4,7-5 victory to close out the Thunder.
Alma caps off the regular season at home tomorrow, April 24, welcoming Calvin College for a match at 4:00 p.m.
