Box Score 2 The Alma College Baseball team hosted Adrian College on Sunday afternoon in an MIAA doubleheader and the second day of a weekend series. The Bulldogs took game one by a score of 4-1 and completed the sweep by winning the nightcap by a margin of 19-6.
With the two losses, Alma fell to 5-11 in the MIAA and 14-14 overall, while Adrian improved to 21-6 in 2015 and 14-2 in the league.
Game One: Adrian 4, Alma 1
In the first game, the Bulldogs scored two runs in each of the second and third innings and made it hold up en route to a 4-1 victory over the host Scots.
In the top of the second frame, Adrian led off with a single and after an out, the Bulldogs doubled off of Alma starting Jr. P Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis) to put runners on second and third. That was followed by a single by Adrian's Frank Resto, giving the visitors the 2-0 lead.
Then, the Bulldogs added to the lead in the top of the third by scoring two more off of Jock. A walk, a popout, a double and a strikeout put runners on second and third with two outs. This time, Collin Parcher came up with the big two out single and the Bulldogs led 4-0.
The Scots would cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning as Sr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) and Fr. 2B Austin Roeske (Warren/De La Salle) led of with singles. A double play put Delrosa on third with two outs. Jr. 3B Dayne San Miguel (Wheeler/Breckenridge) salvaged the rally by coming up with an RBI single that made it a 4-1 game.
However, the Scots were not able to muster any other threats during the final three innings, and Adrian held on for the three-run road win in the first game of the day.
Jock went 6.1 innings and allowed eight hits, four earned runs to go with two walks and four strikeouts. Sr. P Roderick MacNeil (Brethren/Brethren) got the final two outs on the hill for the Scots with one strikeout. Offensively, Alma generated just three hits in the loss.
Game Two: Adrian 19, Alma 6
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs jumped on the Scots early and often as they cruised to a 19-6 win and a two-game sweep of the afternoon.
In the top of the first off of Alma starting So. P Alex Valasek (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic), the Bulldogs struck for four runs on four hits and were helped by two walks. Oddly enough, Valasek struck out the side as well in the frame.
Jr. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) took over on the hill in the top of the second but allowed four earned runs and a walk in 1.1 innings pitched. So. P Ed Farington (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) then came into pitch but ran into more trouble.
Adrian put two more on the board in the second and added an eight-spot in the third to take a 14-0 lead after three. The visitors dinged two homeruns among their eight hits in the third and So. P Mike Mallory (Ithaca/Ithaca) came in to get the Scots out of the jam in the frame.
The Bulldogs added four more in the top of the fourth to extend their advantage to 18-0 before the Scots' bats came to life in their half of the frame. Alma struck for six runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 18-6.
Adrian errors helped keep the Alma inning alive and four of the six runs were unearned in the frame. However, four different Scots notched RBI's in the rally - Delrosa, Roeske, So. PH Pat Finn (Allentown/Almont) and So. SS Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Catholic Central).
In the top of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs closed out the game's scoring with an unearned run off of Alma relief Sr. P Kyle Gorski (West Bloomfield/Orchard Lake St. Mary's) to make it 19-6. Even though the Scots could not score again on the day, the home team got two scoreless innings of relief pitching from MacNeil and Sr. Eric Strickler (Lapeer/Lapeer East).
During the second game, the Scots used 15 position players and seven pitchers, while the Bulldogs had four pitchers and 19 position players see action.
Alma is now off for Final Exams this week and will next play on Friday, the 17th at home against Calvin College. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
