Game 1 - Aurora 4, Alma 1

In the first game of the weekend, the Scots jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. So. 3B Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Farmington Hills) led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Jr. Erick Cruz (Brooklyn, NY/Colegio Juan XX III).

The Spartans responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame off Alma starting Jr. P Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis). Aurora had four hits in the rally, including a homerun and three singles.

From that point on, it was a pitching and defensive ballgame until the bottom of the eighth inning. Aurora scored the final run of the game in their half of the frame when they singled and eventually had runners on second and third. The tally crossed the plate in a rare stolen base of home to make it 4-1.

The Scots mustered just five hits in the game and two of them came from Peczynski. On the mound, Jock went the distance and pitched a solid game with the exception of the rough first inning. He allowed seven hits in eight innings with five walks and five strikeouts.

Game 2 - Alma 3, Aurora 2

The final game of Friday saw Alma turn the tides on the Spartans and come away with a hard-fought one-run victory.

Aurora, the visiting team in this contest, again roughed up an Alma starting pitcher in the first inning. This time, So. P Alex Valasek (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) was the victim as he allowed two runs on two hits and was victimized by one fielding error as Aurora pushed out to a 2-0 lead.

The Scots would respond in the bottom of the second inning by scoring three runs and taking a 3-2 advantage. Those runs would actually close out the scoring for the day, as it became another defensive, pitching duel.

Jr. LF Jose Corniel (Bronx, NY/Norman Thomas) led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Sr. 1B Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) walked. Fr. SS Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township/De La Salle) followed with a single that scored Corniel and advanced Leddy to second.

Fr. 2B Austin Roeske (Warren/De La Salle) then sacrificed the runners up a base with one out. Peczynski was up next and grounded out to the shortstop on a play that scored Leddy and moved Minaudo to third base. Sr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) followed with a double to right center that allowed Minaudo to cross the plate with Alma's third run.

Jr. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) threw five shutout innings for the Scots and earned the win in relief. He gave up just two hits and had no walks to go with one strikeout. Valasek finished the day by going 1.1 innings, allowing three hits, the two earned runs, two walks and had one strikeout. Jr. P Matt Launstein (Flushing/Flushing) threw two thirds of an inning in relief of Valasek and alllowed one hit and had two walks and one strikeout.

Game 3 - Aurora 6, Alma 4

On Saturday, the two teams battled it out to win the series and the Spartans were able to take advantage of four Alma errors (four unearned runs) by coming away with the two-run victory.

For the third straight game, Aurora jumped out of the game fast and took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Spartans were able to use three hits off of Scots starting P Jean Soucy (La Pocatiere, Quebec/Cardinal-Roy) to score the go-ahead runs.

Aurora added three more in the bottom of the second as they took advantage of three defensive errors by the Scots, as all runs were unearned and Soucy did not allow a hit. But, Alma found themselves down 5-0 after two and the score remained that way until the top of the fifth inning.

In that frame, Leddy started the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground out. Jr. C A.J. Acton (Temecula, CA/Linfield Christian) then doubled down the right field line scoring Leddy and making it a 5-1 game. Peczynski then singled, advancing Acton to third with one out. Minaudo reached on a fielder's choice that forced Peczynski out at second but scored Acton. That was followed by a Delrosa double that allowed Minaudo to score and cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Scots cut it to 5-4 in the top of the seventh as Acton reached first on a bunt single and moved to second on a single by Peczynski. After an error loaded the bases and a subsequent strikeout, Sr. CF Juan Dominguez (New York, NY/Blue Ridge) hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Acton. This cut Alma's deficit to 5-4 but would prove to be the last run of the day for the Scots.

The Spartans added an unearned insurance run in the bottom of the eighth of off Scots Jr. P Colin Nash (Brighton/Brighton) to make it a 6-4 game. The Scots were able to get two runners on base in the ninth but could not capitalize and came away on the wrong end of a two-run ballgame.

Soucy got the loss on the mound by going two innings and allowing three hits, five runs (two earned) with three walks and a strikeout. Nash was next and went 5.2 innings of one-run ball (unearned) and gave up four hits with one base on balls and three strikeouts. Sr. P Roderick MacNeil (Brethren/Brethren) and Launstein closed it out on the mound for the Scots in the loss.

At the plate, Peczynksi and Delrosa both went three for five, while Acton and Jr. 2B David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) both had two hits for the Scots.
