Box Score Through the first four games of the Alma College Baseball team's Spring Break trip to Florida, the common theme was pitching and defense en route to a 4-0 start. On Tuesday against Hanover College (OH), the Scots used a different approach and defeated the Panthers in a slugfest, 12-7.
As opposed to the normal two seven inning doubleheaders, the two teams played one nine inning game. With the victory, Alma is now a perfect 5-0 on the young season, while the Panthers fell to 1-1 on the first day of action for their team.
The Scots, as the home team on the scoreboard, scored four runs in the first and Hanover responded with six of their own in the top of the third. Alma made it a 6-5 game in the bottom of the third and re-took the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth frame by tallying three runs to make it 8-6.
The Panthers notched one run in the top of the seventh but Alma responded with four in the bottom half of that inning and extended their advantage to the final 12-7 margin of victory.
Fr. P Eric Frontzak (Naperville, IL/Montini Catholic) started on the mound for the Scots and pitched two innings, allowing three hits, no walks, one strikeout and four runs. Jr. P Colin Nash (Brighton/Brighton) and finished the frame and allowed four hits, one walk and two runs with one strikeout.
The final six innings rested on the arm of Jr. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly), who earned the win by allowing just two hits, one earned run and one hit batter to go with three strikeouts.
On offense, the Scots had several players that stood out and led the team to the win. Sr. 1B Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) had four singles, while Jr. LF Jose Corniel (Bronx, NY/Norman Thomas) had two doubles. In addition, Jr. CF David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides), Sr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) and Sr. 3B Juan Dominguez (New York, NY/Blue Ridge) all had two hits in the win.
After a day off on Wednesday, the Scots return to action on Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Beach Field. First game is scheduled to begin at Noon, with the nightcap being about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
