Alma dominates in Friday's match against Kalamazoo

Alma, Mich. - Friday (Oct. 9) began the second round of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference play and the Alma College volleyball increased their win streak to four after defeating Kalamazoo 3-0 (25-12, 26-24, 25-11). After the victory Alma improved to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in the MIAA while Kalamazoo fell to 1-18 on the season and 0-9 in conference play.

In set number one, Alma jumped out to an early 15-6 lead after two consecutive service aces from junior Molly Lark (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg) forcing Kalamazoo in to a time out. The Scots would continue the run taking the first set from the Hornets 25-12.

Kalamazoo took the early lead in the second set yet Alma capitalized off of five consecutive Hornet errors to cut the gap and take the lead, 8-3. Kalamazoo managed to take the 23-20 lead on a kill from Kalamazoo player Kaela Van Till. Alma answered with a 6-1 run and took the second set 26-24 on a kill from junior Kendall Sells (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores).

The third set was quick for the Scots as they defeated the Hornets 25-11. Alma had their team high of the night with 11 kills and only two errors hitting a best .360.

Junior Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) and senior Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) paced the way for the Scots with six kills a piece. Junior Madison Smith (Westphalia, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) finished with two block solo's and three block assists.

Alma will stay in the Art Smith Arena for tomorrow's (Oct.10) match aiming to increase their win streak to five where they host Hope College with a game time set for 1:00 p.m.
