Alma defeats Saint Mary's on the road, 3-1

Notre Dame, Ind. - Hopes to finish in the top four of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and make the MIAA tournament stays alive for the Alma College volleyball as they defeated the Belle's of Saint Mary's College tonight (Oct. 30) 3-1.

The first set was a game of back and forth runs as neither team backed down. The Scots were trailing by one, 17-18 but went on a 6-1 run not giving the Belle's a final chance as they took the first set 25-20. 

Saint Mary's led early in the second set 7-2 but four consecutive kills from senior Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) kept the Scots in the game.  Alma ultimately won set two 25-18 on a kill from senior Maggie Miler (Frankfort, Mich./Frankfort).

The Scots led for the majority of the third set but a kill from Belle's, Hecklinski managed to knot the game up 18-18 and they ended up defeating Alma 26-24 to force a fourth set. 

Alma trailed the entire fifth set but still knotted the game on three separate occasions and on the last one (20-20) Alma took the next point and stayed ahead defeating the Belle's 25-22. This set win sealed the deal for Alma and they defeated Saint Mary's 3-1 on the evening. 

Guilford led yet again with another double double, 18 kills and 11 digs. Junior Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) was in close pursuit with 12 kills and eight digs. Miller reached a career game high nine block assists and sophomore Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) added 20 assists. 

The end of the season is looking up for Alma with the intent to make the conference tournament, which takes the top four teams. Alma has one game left in regular season to keep the tournament dreams alive which is this Saturday (Oct. 31) at 6:30 p.m. where they will host Adrian College in the Art Smith Arena on the campus of Alma College.
