Alma, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team hosted Trine University in a five set match where the Scots ultimately defeated the Thunder 3-2 (25-12, 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12). After the victory Alma is still in the hunt for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) tournament as they stand at .500 (7-7) in conference play. Prior to the loss Trine was holding the third place position in the MIAA standings and now has a conference record 8-7.

Alma jumped out to a very quick 7-1 lead on the Thunder and the Scots rode the wave the rest of the set defeating Trine 25-12 in set number one. Senior Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) notched four kills on only seven attempts in set number one for an attacking percentage of .429.

Set two was similar and the Scots found themselves with the 11-5 lead after a kill from senior Maggie Miller (Frankfort, Mich./Frankfort). It was a back and forth set but Trine battled back with an 11-3 run taking the 20-19 lead over the Scots. Trine was set out to win the second set and brought Alma down 25-22.

In the third set it was another battle from both sides of the court but a kill from Trine's player, Wilder forced Alma to take the time out as they trailed 14-12. Alma would not be able to bounce back and were defeated set three 25-20.

It was Alma's time to shine in the fourth set to force a game five. Alma did just that and capitalized on Trine's seven errors and .067 hitting percentage. Alma handedly won game four 25-20 moving in to the final 15 point set.

The Scots dominated the beginning of the fifth game with the 8-3 lead. Alma maintained this tempo keeping the gap far and holding the 14-7 lead after a Trine error. Trine however was not ready to give up as they went on a 5-0 run but a final Trine attacking error sealed the deal for the Scots as they won set five 15-12 and the game 3-2.

Alma was led by Guilford who recorded her 12th double double of the 2015 campaign with 16 kills and 20 digs. Miller wasn't far behind with 14 kills (.455 hitting percentage), two block solos and three block assists.

Alma will continue the fight to reach the MIAA tournament on Friday (Oct. 30) with a game time set for 7:00 p.m. where they will travel down to Saint Mary's College to take on the Belle's in one of the two final games of the season. The last time the Scots matched up with the Belle's Alma triumphed over them defeating them 3-2.
