Box Score Albion, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team traveled down to Albion, Mich. on Tuesday (Oct. 20) to take on the Britons of Albion College. Alma entered the match 9-14 overall and 5-6 in the MIAA while Albion entered 14-9 overall and 4-6 in the MIAA.
The Scots hit the road with a must win game as they are battling for the fourth spot in the conference tournament. It was a tight first set, but Albion capitalized off of Alma's eight errors and the Brits came out on top 25-22. Junior Kendall Sells (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) led the Scots in the first set with five kills.
Alma found themselves down in the second set 8-12 but the Scots cut the lead and tied the ball game 14-14 after a service ace from junior Jackie Vyskocil (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep). The Scots battled but Albion took set number two 25-23.
In the third set the Scots came to life beating down on Albion defeating them 25-16 to force a fourth match. Alma capitalized off of Albion's low hitting percentage of .143 as they hit a team high of the day .361.
Alma jumped to an 8-5 lead in the fourth set and never looked back as they took down the Britons 25-18 moving in to the fifth and final set of the day. In the fifth set the game was tied 7-7 but a kill from senior Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) gave Alma the lead they needed and a kill from Sells on an assist from sophomore Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) sealed the deal and the Scots defeated Albion 15-12 to win the overall match 3-2.
Sells led the way to the Scots victory with a career high 19 kills, she also notched two block assists. Guilford posted yet another double double for her 11th of the season with 14 kills and 23 digs, which was a career high in digs. Senior Maggie Miller (Frankfort, Mich./Frankfort) tied a career high six block assists. Defensive specialist Vyskocil also nabbed a career high and today's team high 24 digs. Last but not least Pelach reached a career high of 43 assists to help aid to the Scots victory.
Alma looks to get another victory on the road this Saturday (Oct. 24) in Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on #4 nationally ranked Calvin College and the game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
