Box Score 2 Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. to participate in the Calvin Tournament. It was a tournament of competition as both team the Scots faced were nationally ranked in Division III. In the first game Alma was defeated by #16 Elmhurst College (Ill.) 3-0, which was followed by a 3-0 loss to #11 Carthage College (Wis.).
Match One: Elmhurst College (Ill.)
In the first match of the 3-0 loss to Elmhurst the Scots trailed the entire match, ultimately being defeated 25-15. The second match looked more promising for Alma as they jumped out to a 13-11 lead after a kill from junior Kendall Sells (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) but a 14-3 run for Elmhurst gave them the second set 25-16. Alma had a 7-2 lead in the third on a kill from senior Maggie Miller (Frankfort, Mich./Frankfort) forcing Elmhurst in to a timeout but the Scots would be defeated set three 25-22.
Senior Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) notched her ninth double double of her senior year with 10 kills and 10 digs. Sells and junior Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) chipped in six kills a piece and libero Maressa Miller (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) put 11 digs on the board.
Match Two: Carthage College (Wis.)
Alma gave Carthage the 14-4 lead in the first set handing them the 25-14 win finding themselves down 1-0. The Scots reenergized in the second game cutting Carthage's lead 12-10 on a kill by Miller from freshman Maria Feldpausch (White Cloud, Mich./White Cloud). The third set gave Alma hope as they trailed by no more than three points but Carthage would take set three 25-21 and the game 3-0.
Guilford led again for the Scots recording yet another double double and her 10th of the year with 11 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Dakota Pelach (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) added to the board with 13 assists and seven digs.
At the end of the day the Alma College volleyball team is now 9-14 overall and 5-6 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). After a much competitive day and tournament the Scots will return to conference play on the road and will travel to Albion, Mich. to take on Albion College in their second match up of the season. The last time the two teams met the Scots defeated the Britons handedly, 3-1.
