Box Score On Tuesday evening, the Alma College Volleyball team hosted MIAA foe Saint Mary's College at Art Smith Arena. In front of 514 raucous fans, the home team defeated the visitors from Indiana 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 25-13).
With the win, Alma improved their overall mark to 5-1 and are now 1-0 in the MIAA, while the Belles fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league.
"This was a great conference win," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "Saint Mary's is a good team with a fast offense. It is always tough to start conference right away after the long Labor Day weekend, but the girls did a nice job playing together once their nerves wore off."
For the Scots, Jr. OH/MH Maggie Miller (Frankfort/Frankfort) had 11 kills for the Scots, while Jr. OH/DS Hannah Guilford (Hartland/Hartland) added 10 kills and 13 digs. So. S Mary Dulzo (Novi/Mercy) was credited with 16 assists and 13 digs and Sr. OH/DS Laura Walker (Roscommon/Roscommon) contributed 13 digs and seven assists.
So. OH/DS Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) finished the match with five kills, seven digs and four assists. So. DS/L Molly Lark (Middleville/Thornapple-Kellogg), seeing her most extensive playing time of the season, added 13 digs and So. OH/DS Maressa Miller (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) notched four assists and seven digs.
Up next for the Scots is a tri-match on Friday evening at Adrian College. After playing the Bulldogs in a MIAA contest at 4:30 p.m., Alma will then take on #10 Mount Union University in a non-league match at 6:30 p.m.
