Box Score 2 After a late night that saw the Alma College Volleyball team not able to get to sleep until the early morning, the squad was up bright and early to prepare for two more matches on Saturday. The Scots took on host Capital University (OH) in match one and defeated the home team 3-1 (25-10, 25-21, 20-25 and 25-16).
Alma then wrapped up the tournament with an afternoon match against Baldwin Wallace University and defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-2 (25-8, 18-25, 25-22, 24-26 and 15-12). With today's victories, Alma comes home with an undefeated mark of 4-0 and will host Saint Mary's College in the MIAA opener on Tuesday night.
"Overall, this was a nice, challenging weekend for us," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "We have a very tough week ahead of us and we learned a lot throughout the weekend about our strengths and weaknesses. We will continue to work on those weak areas in practice and understand our strengths to kick off this week of conference matches."
Against Capital, the Scots cruised to the relatively easy 15-point win in the first set and also two the second set by four points. The Crusaders however showed some fight and defeated the visitors by five points to cut their deficit to 2-1. But, Alma was not to be denied. They earned a hard-fought nine-point victory in the fourth set to wrap up the match win.
"We started off very strong both offensively and defensively this morning against Capital," remarked Dehring. "They adapted well to what we were doing and challenged both our attackers and defense."
So. S Mary Dulzo (Novi/Mercy) paced the Scots with 31 assists and added 17 digs and service ace. Jr. OH/DS Hannah Guilford (Hartland/Hartland) had 11 kills, 12 digs and five assists, while So. OH/DS Maressa Miller (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) contributed five service aces, five assists and six digs.
In addition, Fr. RS/S Dakota Pelach (Gaylord/Gaylord) and Jr. OH/MH Maggie Miller (Frankfort/Frankfort) each had 11 kills. Jr. OH/DS Laura Walker (Roscommon/Roscommon) added 14 digs and So. OH/DS Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) notched eight kills, 10 digs, four service aces and two assists.
In the Baldwin Wallace match, Alma won the first and third sets, while the Yellow Jackets took the second and fourth. That set up the deciding fifth set and the Scots were able to prevail with a close three-point victory.
"Baldwin Wallace kept us on our toes," finished Dehring. "They hit a lot of shots that made our defense work for digs and really challenged our passers with a variety of different serves."
Statistically, Sr. OH Kayla Muxlow (Brown City/Brown City) finished with eight kills, four digs, three blocked shots and four service aces. Guilford had 12 kills and seven digs, while Dulzo added 30 assists, 17 digs and five service aces.
In addition, Pelach had nine kills and six digs in the win over BW and Laykova contributed nine killsm 10 digs and four assists.
