Scots Men's Tennis hold on to defeat Calvin College 5-4 at home

It was a bright and sunny day in central Michigan on Wednesday, when the Alma College Men's Tennis team welcomed Calvin College to campus for a match on the outdoor courts. It came down to the final set, but the Scots managed to secure the 5-4 victory over the Knights at home.

With the win, Alma improves to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. Calvin drops to 4-7 on the year and 0-3 in conference play, following the loss on the road.

"This really was a great win for us." said Alma Head Coach Chris Sandro. "The guys remained focused throughout the match and this victory really shows how far we have come this year."

The Knights would claim the first two doubles matches of the afternoon, to take the 2-0 lead heading into the final doubles contest.

The duo of Sr. Joshua Gove and So. Jared Guy would put the Scots on the board with an 8-4 victory in third position, and heading into singles play the visitors held the 2-1 advantage.

Calvin would take the first singles match on Wednesday, extending the lead to 3-1.

Fr. Grant Hill responded with a 6-2,6-4 victory in third position to close the gap to 3-2.

Fr. Bryan Schutte then followed with a win at position four, 6-1,7-5, to knot the score at 3-3.

The Knights took fifth position 6-1,7-6 and the score read 4-3 with two matches remaining.

In sixth position Sr. Gordon Rumschlag claimed the 6-1,6-4 victory and the score was all knotted at 4-4 with only one match remaining.

The first position match was played last on Wednesday, so the win rested on each program's best. Gove dropped the first set, but battled back to seal the win for Alma in a three-set thriller (5-7, 6-3,6-4).

The Scots will participate in the NCAC-MIAA Challenge in Crawfordsville, IN over the weekend. With the first matches set to start on Friday.
