Alma Baseball triumphed over Kalamazoo 2-1 on Tuesday

Box Score

The seemingly neverending quest to make up all the early season postponements continued on Tuesday afternoon when the Alma College baseball team traveled to Kalamazoo to finally finish the season's four-game series.

Alma at least made the wait and travel worthwhile as they came from behind to defeat the Hornets by a score of 2-1. It was the Scots' seventh game in four days and Alma finished a very respectable 5-2 in that span.

After today, Alma is now 8-4 in the MIAA and 14-8 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 4-8 in the league and 6-14 in 2014.

You would expect a high scoring affair with all with all those games in such a short time, but Tuesday proved to be just the opposite as both teams received outstanding pitching.

In the bottom of the first inning, Kalamazoo would score their lone run of the contest. A single, a stolen base and a single that advanced the runner one base put Hornets at first and third with one out.

That was followed by a sacrifice fly against Alma So. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) that put Kalamazoo ahead 1-0. However, a Hornets runner would not see home plate again on this afternoon.

The Scots tied the game at 1-1 in their half of the third inning as So. C Doug Walters (Brighton/Brighton) walked and moved to second with one out on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a flyout by Fr. SS Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Catholic Central) and then scored an unearned run on a passed ball.

Kalamazoo loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning, but were unable to score and the two teams were deadlocked heading into the seventh.

Jr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) tripled to start the top of the seventh frame. Sr. 3B Bryan Goostrey (Jackson/East Jackson) was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on base. Fr. DH Jeremiah Johnson (Bloomingdale/Bloomingdale) then grounded out second to first.

However, the Kzoo first baseman then committed a throwing error and Delrosa was able to scamper home with the go-ahead run.

The Hornets did not go away quietly however. Alma Jr. relief P Eric Strickler (Lapeer/Lapeer East) gave up a two-out double, but was able to close the door on the home team and preserve the victory.

Ordiway went 3.2 innings and allowed the earned run on five hits, one walk with one strikeout. Strickler picked up the win (3-1) as he went 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and a base on balls to go with one K.

Alma now has a few days rest before a big four-game series this weekend with first-place Adrian College. The two teams play a doubleheader at Adrian on Saturday and two more in Alma on Sunday. Both days' games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
