Scots Baseball loses two at Olivet on Monday afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

On Monday afternoon, Alma College and Olivet College finally finished their baseball season series after a couple of weather postponements had delayed the process. Unfortunately, it was not a great afternoon for the Scots as the hometeam Comets took both contests.

Olivet jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings of game one enroute to a final 8-4 margin of victory. In the second game, the Comets broke a late tie and held off the Scots by a score of 7-5.

With the two losses, Alma fell to 7-4 in the league and 13-8 overall, while Olivet improved to 3-9 in the MIAA and 5-15 in 2014.

Game 1

In the top of the first inning, Jr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) singled with one out and stole second. He scored to give the Scots a 1-0 lead when Sr. LF Alex Kravat (Auburn/Bay City Western) hit an RBI single to center field.

Olivet answered with three earned runs off of Alma starting Jr. P Kolbi Shumaker (Boyne City/Boyne City). The Comets' rally consisted of a walk and three singles. In the bottom of the third, Fr. P Mike Mallory (Ithaca/Ithaca) came into pitch for Alma and walked the first batters of the frame, prompting a relief appearance by So. P Matt Launstein (Flushing/Flushing).

After a strikeout, Launstein gave up three singles and was victimized by an infield error that resulted in four additional runs and a 7-1 Olivet advantage.

So. P Shawn Larner (Gladwin/Gladwin) was next in line on the mound for the Scots and had lasted for 1.1 innings. In the bottom half of the fourth frame, Olivet had two hits, a walk and an error off of Larner and added one more run for a 8-1 lead.

The Scots responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Fr. SS Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Central Catholic) reached on an error by the shortstop. Delrosa then singled and Kravat was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Jr. 1B Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) followed with a two-run double to make it 8-3. Jr. DH Juan Dominguez (New York, NY/Blue Ridge) then reached on an error that scored Leddy to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Even though the Scots had runners on in each of the last two innings, they could not push any additional runs across and suffered the four-run loss.

Shumaker earned the loss on the mound to fall to 0-2 on the season. The final pitcher of the day for Alma, Jr. Roderick MacNeil (Brethren/Brethren) threw the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit and recorded three strikeouts.

Delrosa finished three for four at the plate with two runs scored, while Kravat was two of three with a run and one RBI. In addition, Leddy went two for four at the plate and had the two RBI's.

Game 2

Alma took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the nightcap without recording a hit. Dominguez walked and moved over to second on a sac bunt before stealing third base. Jr. 2B Jose Rosado (Corona, NY/Bryant) then got hit by a pitch. So. C A.J. Acton (Temecula, CA/Linfield Christian) then grounded out for an RBI.

Olivet made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the second as the first five batters of the frame got on base against Alma starting Fr. P Alex Valasek (Saginaw/Nouvel Central Catholic) - five singles - and then a balk scored the final run.

In the top of the third, Alma cut the deficit to 3-2, again with no hits. Peczynski walked with one out, Kravat was hit by a pitch and Leddy grounded out moving both runners up a base. Dominguez then walked to load the bases and Sr. 3B Bryan Goostrey (Jackson/E. Jackson) then followed by getting hit by a pitch and earning an RBI.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the third, Olivet had a walk and a single and Sr. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey/Petoskey) relieved Valasek. After another walk, the Comets singled to center and they led by a 5-2 margin.

The Scots tried to chip away by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Kravat and Leddy walked and were followed by a single by Dominguez to load the bases. Goostrey then lined a single to right center to score two runs and Rosado followed with his own RBI single, tying the game at 5-5.

However, this was not to be Alma's afternoon. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Olivet scored two unearned runs off of two Scots errors as Thompson was victimized and recorded the loss. With the game still tied and runners on second and third, Launstein came on in relief but gave up a double to the first batter and the Comets had regained the lead at 7-5.

In the top of the seventh, Alma loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks. But, with two outs, Alma Fr. PH Pat Finn (Allentown/Almont) grounded out second to first to end the game.

The Scots play at Kalamazoo College on Tuesday night in the final game of the season series between the two clubs. Start time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
