Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Scots baseball team hit the road again on Sunday afternoon and took on host Trine University in a MIAA doubleheader in Angola, Ind. Alma won both games by identical 2-1 scores to complete a four-game weekend sweep. The Scots defeated Trine 3-1 and 8-5 on Saturday.
With today's triumphs, Alma is now 7-2 in the league and 13-6 overall, while the Thunder fell to 4-8 in the MIAA and 9-13 in 2014.
Game 1
In the first game, the Thunder led off their half of the first inning with two singles and a fielder's choice that put runners on second and third with one out. The following batter then hit a sacrifice fly that gave the home team a 1-0 advantage.
Little did they know at the time that the scoring would be done in the opener for Trine.
Alma answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second inning. Jr. 1B Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) led off the frame with a single and was still on first after a strikeout and a popout.
However, the rally was not quite done. So. OF David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) doubled putting Leddy at third. So. C A.J. Acton (Temecula, CA/Linfield Christian) then followed with a two-bagger of his own, knocking in two runs and giving the Scots a 2-1 lead.
The scoring would be done for the game as the pitchers on both sides settled down and dominated the remainder of the way. Alma starting So. P Colin Nash (Brighton/Brighton) retired 13 batters in a row after giving up the first inning run.
That streak by Nash ended with a harmless walk in the sixth and the Scots took the one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh. Trine's first batter of the frame reached first on an infield error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Alma then inserted So. P Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis) into the game and he shut the door on the Thunder, striking out both batters that he faced. Jock's performance earned him his first save of the season and preserved the win for Nash, who improved to 3-1 on the season.
Each team mustered just three hits in the game and the Scots had the only error. Nash gave up the three hits in 6.1 innings pitched and had four strikeouts to go with one base on balls.
Game 2
Despite being able to generate little offense as illustrated by just two hits, the Scots prevailed in the nightcap with good pitching, solid defense and one big stroke of the bat in defeating Trine again by a margin of 2-1.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Thunder loaded the bases against Jock, Alma's starting pitcher in game two, on a hit batter and two singles. However, Jock was able to work out of the jam to keep it a 0-0 game.
Trine was able to score their only run in the bottom of the third frame as they put together two singles, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI ground out to take a 1-0 advantage. But, again Jock was able to keep the damage to a minimum.
Alma notched their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth, when Jr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) singled to center. However, he would become a victim of a double play off the bat of Leddy to end the inning.
Finally, in the top of the sixth inning, Alma was able to get on the board against Trine P Vinny Slobodecki. With two outs, Fr. SS Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Catholic Central) reached on an error by the shortstop. Delrosa followed with a blast to left field for a two-run homer, giving Alma the 2-1 lead.
Trine did make it interesting however in the bottom of the seventh frame. A single and a sac bunt gave the Thunder a runner at second base with two outs. They followed that with another hit out to right field and the runner, Jake Kendall, attempted to score and tie the game. However, he was gunned down at the plate on a throw from Delrosa to So. C Doug Walters (Brighton/Brighton) that ended the contest and gave Alma the victory.
Pitching in relief, Scots So. P Matt Launstein (Flushing/Flushing) finished the contest with two scoreless innings to secure his first save of the season. So. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) kept Trine scoreless in two innings of work to earn the win, giving up one hit and notching two strikeouts.
Jock allowed five hits, one run and had one strikeout in his three innings, while Launstein gave up two hits and recorded two K's.
Alma is scheduled to play two games at Olivet College on Monday afternoon in a makeup of an earlier postponed doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
