Box Score 2 On Saturday evening, the Alma College baseball team played two more "home" games on the campus of Adrian College due to field conditions at Klenk Park in Alma.
Being away from the friendly confines did not affect the Scots as they swept two games from league foe Trine University by scores of 3-1 and 8-5.
With the wins, Alma is now in third place in the MIAA with a record of 5-2 and are 11-6 overall, while the Thunder dropped to 4-6 in the league and 9-11 in 2014.
Game 1
After Trine was scoreless in the top of of the first inning of the opener, the Scots scored one run in the bottom of the frame as Jr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) tripled and scored on an RBI single by Sr. LF Alex Kravat (Auburn/Bay City Western).
Alma made the score 2-0 in the bottom of the third as Fr. SS Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Central Catholic) singled, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. He then crossed the plate as Kravat grounded out to the right side for an RBI.
The Thunder was finally able to scratch a run off of Alma Jr. P Eric Strickler (Lapeer/Lapeer East) as they had a single, stolen base, a ground out and then a passed ball to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, even though Alma already had enough runs in this game, the Scots added one more to get regain the two-run cushion.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Peczynski reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a hit by Kravat. The score became 3-1 when Jr. 1B Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) then hit an RBI single, scoring Peczynski from second.
After Strickler walked the leadoff hitter in the top of the seventh, So. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) came entered the game in relief and recorded the final three outs, two by strikeout, to earn the save.
Strickler had an impressive day on the bump by going six innings and allowing just one hit while recording four strikeouts with five walks. Ordiway did not allow a hit in his one inning of relief.
In the batter's box, Peczynski finished two for three with two runs scored, while Kravat recorded two hits in three at bats and had two RBI's. Delrosa had a run scored and Leddy had one RBI in the victory.
Game 2
In the bottom of the first inning of the second game, Alma went ahead 1-0 on three singles - by Delrosa, Kravat and an RBI hit by Leddy. Trine took a 2-1 lead of their own in the top of the third frame as Scots starting P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey/Petoskey) walked two and then gave up a double.
Alma scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the third as Kravat singled between two strikeouts. Jr. DH Juan Dominguez (New York, NY/Morris) then reached on an error followed by a walk to So. CF David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) that loaded the bases.
Sr. 3B Bryan Goostrey (Jackson/East Jackson) then earned an RBI on another walk to make it a 2-2 contest. So. C A.J. Acton (Temecula, CA/Linfield Christian) followed with a bases clearing double that gave Alma a 5-2 advantage.
Trine answered with two unearned runs in the top of the fourth frame to cut the Alma lead to 5-4 and then tied it in the fifth on a single, stolen base and another single off of Thompson. So. P Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis) came into the game in relief and shut down the rally.
The Scots wasted no time in retaking the lead as they scored two runs in their half of the fifth frame. Leddy walked and then scored on a triple by Dominguez, and after another single by Goostrey, Alma led 7-5.
Alma added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Delrosa singled and moved to second on an error. He then made it an 8-5 game when Leddy singled down the left field line.
Ordiway earned his second save of the day as he pitched two scoreless innings for Alma, allowing no hits, two walks and he had one strikeout. Jock improved to 4-2 on the season after his two thirds of an inning in relief of Thompson, who lasted 4.1 innings.
Thompson, the starter for Alma, allowed eight hits, three unearned runs and three walks. He also recorded five strikouts in his outing.
Delrosa, Goostrey, Kravat and Leddy each had two hits in the win, while Acton had a team-high three RBI's for the Scots.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday down in Angola, Ind. The games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
