Alma Baseball drops three at Adrian on Sunday afternoon

On a gloomy Sunday afternoon, the Alma College Baseball team traveled to Nicolay Field for a key conference doubleheader against Adrian College. Prior to the scheduled twinbill, the Scots and Bulldogs picked up yesterday's game in the fourth inning that was postponed and relocated due to weather. In the continuation game, the Scots dropped a 5-0 decision to Adrian before starting the doubleheader.

Alma dropped both games of the doubleheader on Sunday, falling 12-7 in game one and 4-0 in game two.

Following Sunday's action, the Scots move to 14-12 on the year and 8-8 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs jump to 20-7 overall behind a 14-2 mark in conference play with the three victories.

Game One

Following a groundout, Sr. IF Alex Kravat (Auburn/Bay City Western) reached base on a walk, and Alma landed the games first baserunner in the top of the first. The Scots would follow with a groundball which led to a double play and the score remained 0-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.

Adrian would take control of the game in the home half of the first, recording six hits and six runs to take the early 6-0 lead at Nicolay Field.

Neither team managed to land a runner in the next inning and half, and the score remained 6-0 going into the bottom of the third.

The Bulldogs recorded another solid inning in the third, collecting two runs to extend the advantage to 8-0.

Kravat led off the fourth with a single, and Alma had one man on with no outs. Following another double play, Kravat would cross home on a passed ball to put the Scots on the board at 8-1.

The home team collected one run in the fourth, and the scoreboard read 9-1 heading into the fifth.

So. C A.J. Acton (Temecula, CA/Linfield Christian) smashed a double into left field in the fifth, and So. OF David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) followed with a double of his own to score Acton from second. The inning ended with a pop up and entering the bottom of the inning, Alma had cut the deficit to seven, 9-2.

Adrian collected three more runs in fifth and extended the lead to double digits at 12-2.

Following a scoreless sixth, Alma entered the seventh with a huge lead to overcome on the road.

Pinch hitting, Fr. IF Pat Finn (Allentown/Almont) led off the seventh inning by getting hit by a pitch, to give the Scots one man on with no outs. Fr. IF Eric McCoy (Williamston/Williamston) followed with a walk, and Sr. IF Travis Trierweiler (Grand Ledge/Lansing Catholic) was beaned to load the bases for Alma in the final inning. Kravat grounded out to first to score Finn from third to make the score 12-3 with one out. With two outs and two on, Jr. OF Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) blasted a homer to bring the Scots within six at 12-6. Walters ended the scoring for Alma with a RBI double to cap the huge inning for the visitors.

Despite the five-run inning, the Scots would drop game one to the Bulldogs 12-7 on Sunday.

Jr. OF Yoan Delrosa  (Bronx, NY/Morris) led Alma with two hits in game one, and Leddy collected a team-best three RBI and one long ball. Kravat, Walters and Carles each tallied one RBI in the loss.

On the mound, Jr. RHP Eric Strickler (Lapeer/Lapeer East) gave up nine runs on nine hits, a homer and was the losing pitcher for the Scots.

Game Two

Adrian put the first runs on the board in the second game, recording two runs on two hits in the first inning to take the early 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, when the Bulldogs put one more on the board after scoring off a wild pitch.

The Scots landed two runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, but were unable to cash in and the score showed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.

The games final run was scored home half of sixth inning, when the Bulldogs connected on a RBI single to left field, to seal the 4-0 victory and secure the sweep on Sunday.

Sr. IF Bryan Goostrey (Jackson/East Jackson), Mccoy and Carles accounted for the three Alma hits in the game two loss.

On the hill, So. LHP Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis) falls to 4-4 with the defeat, after allowing four hits and three earned runs at Nicolay Field.

The Scots will travel to Calvin on Friday, April 18th, for a doubleheader with the Knights starting at 2:00 p.m.
